Eagles Open Season with Split Against William Jessup

CeCe Luster

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Freshman CeCe Luster capped her first collegiate game with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Biola opened the season with a doubleheader split with William Jessup University, winning 3-2 in the opener, but falling 5-2 in the night cap on Friday afternoon.

The Eagles (1-1) opened the day with a solid outing, started early by a pair of seniors. Jillian Storm started the bottom of the first with a bunt single, stole second, then came around to score on a fantastic bunt base hit by fellow senior Lauren Gandy. Just like that Biola was up 1-0.

The Warriors (2-4) came back to tie the score in the top of the third, but Biola responded quickly with as Luster recorded the first of her two RBIs in the game with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the frame. Her solid single up the middle drove home Gandy to put the Eagles back up.

William Jessup tied the game again in the fifth and despite a pair of solid opportunities, Biola was unable to go back on top, necessitating extra innings.

The Warriors had the first crack with the tiebreaker runner placed at second. A deep drive off the bat of Samantha McMahan nearly left the yard but rattled off the top of the fence and was quickly returned to the infield, leaving runners at second and third with no out. But freshman Sheylynn Weststeyn, who entered the game in the fifth, worked out of the jam with a groundout, a strikeout and a popout to keep the game tied at 2-2.

In the bottom of the frame, Biola caught a break as the Warriors attempted to get the out at third on the inning-opening sacrifice bunt by Storm, but failed to get the out. After William Jessup was able to get an out at home on an attempted squeeze bunt, Luster ended the game with a solid single to left to score Storm with the game-winning run.

Weststeyn picked up the win in relief, allowing one run on five hits over the final four innings, adding four strikeouts.

The second game saw a bit of a defensive struggle for the Eagles who allowed William Jessup to score four unearned runs early in the contest thanks to three big errors. Biola starter Kristen Larson was on the tough end of the miscues, leaving after just 1-2/3 innings, allowing no earned runs but trailing 4-0.

The Eagles called upon Luster in the top of the second inning to stop the damage, which she did quickly with a foul out. Luster would allow a run on two hits in the third, but she would close the door after that, giving up just three hits the rest of the way and recording seven strikeouts.

Biola started to come back in the fourth, putting runners at second and third with one out. However, the Eagles were unable to push across a run at that time. After a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, Biola was finally able to break through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles took advantage of an error to score the first run, then added a second on a sacrifice fly by Luster.

That would be it, though, for the Eagles as William Jessups' Kara Besseghini pitched six solid inning with Erin Houston earning the save with a solid seventh.

Luster finished the day going 3-for-6 with three RBIs while Gandy collected three hits, two RBIs and a run scored.

The Eagles face the Warriors again in their next game as they travel to William Jessup for a single game on Feb. 10. Biola then plays a single game against Corban University (Ore.) before heading to the Simpson University tournament in Redding on Feb. 11-12.
