ROCKLIN, Calif. ---
Shaylynn Weststeyn picked up her second win in as many starts with a dominating performance in Biola's 5-0 win over William Jessup in the second game of two non-conference games on Thursday. The Eagles fell 3-1 to Corban University in the first game of the day.
Biola finished the day with a 2-2 record after the split with three of those four early-season decisions coming against the Warriors of William Jessup.
Weststeyn allowed just three hits over five shutout innings against the Warriors. It was her second victory over William Jessup in seven days.
Cece Luster, who came on to pitch the final two innings, also provided a big hit in the contest, finishing with two hits and two RBIs.
Biola got off to a quick start with a run in the first.
Jillian Storm started the game with an infield single, stole second and was moved to third on a groundout. One out later,
Lyndsie Roberts drove her in with a single to left center to put the Eagles up 1-0 early.
in the fourth, Biola tallied four runs to break the game open.
Lauren Gandy collected two RBIs with a bases loaded double followed by a two-run single by Luster to make it a 5-0 game.
In the opener, the Eagles got off to a slow offensive start, collecting just one run on two hits in the game. Starting pitcher
Lyndsie Roberts had both of Biola's hit in an attempt to help herself out. Her first hit came in the fourth. After a one-out walk to Luster, Roberts doubled to put runners at second and third. Weststeyn hit a sacrifice fly to plate Luster, but Roberts was stranded after a groundout ended the inning.
in the top of the frame, Corban scored its first run on a sacrifice fly as well, then added two in the top of the fifth, both coming with two out.
Roberts suffered the loss, her first of the season, while Makenzie Marchbanks earned the win for Corban (1-0) in the team's season opener.
All three teams now head north to Redding, Calif., to take part in the Simpson University Softball Tournament. The Eagles take on Concordia (Ore.), Northwest Christian (Ore.) and College of Idaho in opening day action.
