Lauren Gustafson scored nine points, pulled down 10 rebounds and added six assists to lead Biola to a season-opening 65-45 win over Menlo College in the first game of the Holy Names University Classic in Oakland.
The Eagles (1-0) had a solid night with 11 of the 12 players that saw time on the court scoring at least one point. Gustafson and fellow senior guard
Emily Drews led Biola with nine points each, combining for 18 rebounds overall.
Biola's defense was on display in the first half, holding Menlo to just 3-of-24 from the field and just 19 points overall. The Eagles connected on 12 of their 32 shots in the first 20 minutes of the contest and built a comfortable 29-16 lead at intermission.
The two teams played a bit more evenly in the second half, with Menlo shooting much better and hanging close thanks to five three-pointers. However, the Eagles used a 43-21 rebounding edge in the game to dominate inside and pull away to victory.
Biola faces tournament host Holy Names University in the final game of the season opening classic on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
