LA MIRADA, Calif. ---
David Cline poured in a game-high 17 points and
Dwight Gordon added 16 to lead Biola to its eighth-straight victory, a 72-61 win over San Diego Christian College in a GSAC game Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The Eagles improve to 15-1 on the season and have now won eight-straight games, their longest streak since opening last season with 16-straight wins. They also stay a game out of first place in the conference with a 5-1 mark. The Hawks fall to 7-9 on the season and to 1-5 in conference play.
Cline led Biola in scoring for the second-straight game, pouring in 17 on 7-of-9 shooting. He also added five rebounds and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Gordon added 16 points, four rebounds and four assists in the winning effort.
The Eagles led through much of the game, trailing just once at 3-2 just over one minute into the contest. However, they were never able to pull away too much from San Diego Christian, which stayed within striking distance throughout.
Biola was unable to build a lead of more than five through much of the first half, leading 18-16 with 5:58 to go before halftime. However, the Eagles would use a 9-0 run to stretch the lead to 11 with 2:17 to play but headed to the locker room with a seven-point lead after a three-pointer by Aaron Felix as the half expired.
In the second period, Biola quickly stretched the lead back to double-figures and used another 9-0 run to take a commanding 59-40 lead with 8:38 remaining. The Hawks weren't finished yet, though, and rattled off a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to make it a 61-53 game with 4:30 left.
But SDCC could get no closer than eight the rest of the way. Cline sealed the victory in the final minute with a monster slam and the foul. He would convert the three-point play to make it an 11 point game with 40 seconds to go.
Biola succeeded in slowing down the game and also in dominating inside. The Eagles out-rebounded the Hawks 34-28 and held a 32-20 edge in the paint. Biola also forced 16 turnovers by SDCC and converted them into 22 points.
The Hawks were able to shoot 40.8 percent in the contest, becoming one of just five teams to shoot better than 40 percent against Biola's normally stout defense. The Eagles countered with a 47.2 percent shooting night.
Biola returns to the court on Tuesday, January 11, hosting Fresno Pacific University in a GSAC clash at 7:30 p.m. in Chase Gymnasium.
