IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola pulled off the first triple play in program history and put up a good fight against No. 7 Concordia, but was ultimately swept in its season finale, falling 3-1 and 9-4 in a GSAC doubleheader on Saturday in Irvine.
Biola closes out the regular season with a record of 19-23 and finish fifth in the GSAC with a record of 9-15. Concordia finishes tied for second in the conference at 15-9 and is 40-16 overall. Both teams advance to the GSAC Tournament, which begins May 4.
It didn't take long for Biola to get on the board in the first game, scoring one run on three early hits.
Krista Johnson drove in the lone run for the visitors with a single, scoring
Lauren Gandy and putting Biola on top 1-0.
But Concordia answered back with three runs in the bottom of the second as seven-straight batters reached base.
Neither team was able to put together much after that, though, as the game cruised right along, finishing in just over one hour.
Concordia did threaten twice later in the game, but great plays ended both threats. In the fourth, CUI had runners at second and third with one out, but Johnson snared Katie Carson's line drive at short and stepped on second for the inning ending double play.
In the sixth, Concordia saw the first two batters reach on singles but a great diving catch by left-fielder
Jillian Storm started an inning ending triple play. Storm made the great catch, tossed it back to Gandy at second, who stepped on the bag and threw to
Leslie Larson at first for the triple play.
Biola was unable to get a runner past first after the first inning as Rachel Reeksten allowed one run on six hits to earn the win and improve to 10-9.
Lyndsie Roberts, who is Biola's lone healthy pitcher on the roster, suffered the loss, giving up three runs on 10 hits over six innings to fall to 11-13.
The second game started just like the first with Biola scoring early in the game to go on top after one. Gandy started things off with a one-out triple to left, then scored on a
Sara Smith sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
The score would remain that way until the fourth when Concordia scored two to go back on top. With two out, a Biola error kept the inning going and Concordia took advantage as Alicia Lucatero drove home two unearned runs with a single to left.
CUI would add four more runs in the fifth with another Biola error helping the home team's cause.
Trailing 6-1, Biola rallied for three in the top of the sixth. After Gandy and Smith led off the inning with singles, Roberts helped her own cause with a three-run home run to right to cut the lead to 6-4.
But shoddy defense again allowed Concordia to put the game out of reach as three unearned runs came around in the bottom of the sixth.
Roberts took the tough loss, despite allowing just two earned runs in the game. Jennifer Simons picked up the win with Reekstin earning the save.
Smith had the best offensive day for Biola overall, going 4-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI.
Biola will open the GSAC Tournament on Tuesday, May 4, with a play-in game against the tournament' No. 4 seed, Azusa Pacific University, at 1:30 p.m. The winner will then advance to play a best-of-three series against No. 1 seed California Baptist University. All of Biola's games will be played at CBU.
The other side of the bracket will take place at Point Loma Nazarene, which earned the No. 2 seed in a tie-breaker with Concordia, which will be the No. 3 seed. Concordia will play a play-in game against No. 6 Vanguard before starting a best-of-three series with PLNU. The winners of the two series will play a best-of-three series to determine the GSAC Champ who will earn an automatic berth to the NAIA Championships.
