LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior left-hander
Lyndsie Roberts pitched a pair of gems and helped herself out with a two-run home run in game two as Biola swept a GSAC doubleheader against Vanguard by scores of 2-0 and 3-0 in its final home games of the season on Tuesday.
The Eagles snap an eight-game losing streak and improve to 19-21 on the season and move into fifth place in the GSAC standings with a 9-13 record. The Lions drop to 29-23 and at 8-14 sit in sixth place in the conference.
Roberts, who remains as the lone pitcher on the Biola roster after an injury to
Kristin Larson, was outstanding from the circle on Tuesday. She allowed just 10 hits over 14 scoreless innings, adding three strikeouts. She has now gone 24 innings without allowing an earned run.
In the first game, Biola got on the board early as senior
Krista Johnson celebrated her final home game of her illustrious career with a solo home run in the second. The Eagles would add one more run in the fifth as fellow senior
Brittany Bury drove in a run with a single--her second of the game--to provide all the offense Roberts would need.
Roberts would scatter three hits in the opening game and helped out her cause in a couple of key situations. With a runner at third and two out in the fourth, Roberts got a big strikeout--one of just two on the day--to end the threat. In the sixth inning, the Lions had a runner at third with just one out, but Roberts fielded a comebacker to the circle and made a great throw to get the runner trying to scramble back to the base.
In the second game, Roberts provided all of the offense for Biola, which again got off to a fantastic start with a run in the bottom of the first. Bury opened the frame by reaching on a single, was sacrificed to second and reached third on a wild pitch. Roberts then came up and drove home Bury with a single to left.
In the third inning, Roberts put the game away with a two-run home run just over the fence in right to make it 3-0.
Bury finished the day with three hits in seven at-bats in her final home game at Biola.
The Eagles close out the regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 24), traveling to Irvine to face No. 7 Concordia beginning at Noon.
