AZUSA, Calif. ---Despite a strong pitching performance by junior left-hander
Lyndsie Roberts, Biola dropped a pair of extra inning games at Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, falling 2-1 in nine innings in the first game and 4-3 in eight innings in the second.
The Eagles were unable to snap their losing streak which now is at eight games and falls to 17-21 on the season and to 7-13 in conference play. The Cougars improve to 24-20 overall and 9-11 in the GSAC.
Roberts had a great start to the day in game one, allowing just one run on seven hits through the first eight innings of the game. The one bad inning game in the fourth as she allowed three hits and the only run in regulation.
Biola trailed by that one run until the top of the seventh inning when the Eagles took advantage of an APU error to plate the tying run and force extra innings.
Neither team could score in the eighth and the Eagles were unable to push across a run in the top of the ninth. The Cougars came through with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a Biola error to take the first game, 2-1.
Kristin Larson started game two for the Eagles but was unable to last too long after suffering a bit of an injury. Larson allowed two runs in the bottom of the first and allowed another in the third before making way for Roberts. With the bases loaded, Roberts was able to record a strikeout for the final out of the inning and end the threat.
Roberts would allow just three hits the rest of the way, as the Eagles worked their way back into the game. They would get one run in the top of the fourth as
Brittany Bury led off with a triple and came around to score on a single by
Lauren Gandy.
In the fifth, they would add one more as
Jillian Storm recorded an RBI-single. Biola would tie the game with a run in the sixth as Roberts helped herself out with an RBI-single.
The two teams headed for extra innings still tied at 3-3. The Eagles had the first crack, but just like the last game, they were unable to score a run in the extra frame. In the bottom of the eighth, Erika Marmolejo drove home the winning-run with a double to give the Cougars the victory.
For the afternoon, Roberts allowed just one earned run on 10 hits over 13 innings, adding five strikeouts. Gandy and Bury each added three hits in seven at-bats to help pace the Biola offense.
Biola closes out the home portion of its 2010 schedule with a GSAC doubleheader against Vanguard University on Tuesday (Apr. 20) beginning at 2:00 p.m. Biola will be honoring its four seniors with a ceremony during the game.
