Biola Drops Twinbill to No. 1 Cal Baptist

Krista Johnson

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola put up a valiant effort in game one, but could not keep the momentum up in the second game as the Eagles were swept by scores of 2-0 and 14-2 by No. 1 California Baptist University in a GSAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Freedom Field.

Biola drops to 17-17 on the season and to 7-11 in GSAC play on the heels of its fourth-straight loss. The Lancers improve to 47-1 overall and to 17-1 in the conference.

The Eagles put up a good battle in the first game, allowing just two unearned runs to the defending NAIA Champions.

The Lancers got on the board first with a pair of runs in the second. After a dropped foul ball, leadoff batter Sarah Hurlbut reached on a single. She moved to third on a single by Tina Galinato, who scooted to second on a throw to third. Mara Rodriguez then plated Hurlbut with a sacrifice fly which advanced both runners. After an infield ground out, Ashley Boyd drove home the second run with a double to make it 2-0.

Biola had its best chance to score in the bottom of the second as Krista Johnson hit a ground-rule double down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt moved her to third with two out, but the Lancers worked out of the jam with a strikeout.

The Eagles were unable to muster much after that, recording just two hits the rest of the way off one of the NAIA's best pitchers, Tory Ferreira, who improves to 15-1 on the season.

Roberts suffered the tough loss despite not allowing an earned run. She scattered eight hits and allowed the two unearned runs, striking out six while walking two. Roberts retired nine-straight batters between the third and fifth innings and worked out of numerous jams to keep the team in the game.

California Baptist wasted no time getting on the board in the second game as Ashley Boyd drove the first pitch of the game over the left field fence. The Lancers would add two more runs in the frame and take an early 3-0 lead.

The Lancers would blow the game open with 10 runs in the second. The big blast was a grand slam off the bat of Sarah Hurlbut which came off the first pitch by Roberts, who came in to relieve starter Kristin Larson.

Biola would score its two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to avoid the shutout. Jillian Storm led off the inning with a bunt single. After stealing second base, Storm was sacrificed to third with two out. Johnson drove Storm in with a double to left field, then came around to score on a double to right center by Roberts.

Larson suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on five hits in just one-plus inning. She drops to 8-8 on the season. She would re-enter the game and pitch the final three innings.

Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 13), hosting Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Freedom Field.
