LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior guard
Danny Campbell helped to ensure that history did not repeat itself, pouring in 20 points and adding 11 rebounds as Biola held off California Baptist 65-51 in a GSAC Tournament First-Round game on Thursday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The Eagles, seeded second in the tournament and ranked fifth in the latest NAIA poll, improves to 27-4 with their fourth-straight victory and earn a berth in the GSAC semifinals against arch-rival and No. 3 seed Azusa Pacific. It was Biola's first GSAC Tournament victory since 2001-02, a stretch of seven appearances without a victory.
The Lancers end their season at 18-13.
The game was a rematch of the 2008-09 GSAC Tournament opening round where Cal Baptist came into Chase Gymnasium and soundly beat Biola 80-70. However, the Eagles were determined not to let that happen again.
Campbell led a trio of Biola players in double-figures with his 20-point effort. He was 7-of-14 from the field and added three from beyond the arc. His 20-point, 11-rebound double-double was just the second of the season with the rebound total becoming his new season-high.
Fellow seniors
Rocky Hampton and
Marlon King were the other two Eagles in double-figures. Hampton scored 14 points--all in the second half--and added five blocked shots. Ten of Hampton's points came from the free throw line as the Lancers tried to claw back into the game by fouling him on each Biola possession over the final five minutes. King finished with 12 points and had three steals and three assists.
The Eagles got off to a quick start in the opening half, trailing just once in the game after the Lancers scored the opening bucket. Biola held an 8-4 edge at the 17:24 mark, but went on an 11-4 run over the next six minutes to take an early 12-point advantage. Still leading by 12 with 6:37 left in the period, Cal Baptist cut the gap with an eight-point run to make it 24-20 at the 2:25 mark.
Biola clamped down on the defensive end, though and scored the final six points of the half including a King fast-break layup as time expired to take a 30-20 lead to the half.
In the second, the Eagles got off to a sluggish start. Hampton scored his first points of the game on a jumper 33 seconds into the half, but the Lancers would rattle of an 11-2 run of their own over the next six minutes, pulling within three on a layup by Luke Evans at the 13:55 mark. Evans, who had a chance at a three-point play, missed the free throw and on the ensuing possession, Campbell shut down the run with a tough jumper in the lane. After a turnover on the other end, Campbell came back down and drained a long three to make it an eight-point lead.
Biola would keep the run going on a jumper by
Nate Rakestraw to make it a 41-31 game with 9:43 left. On the other end,
Andrew Schroeder blocked a pair of shot attempts by Evans, then kicked a long rebound up ahead to
David Cline who brought the crowd to its feet with a monstrous dunk.
When all was said and done, the Biola run was a 12-0 run over a six-minute stretch of the second half and would wrap up the victory for the Eagles. Cal Baptist was unable to get closer than nine the rest of the way, despite sending Biola to the line on just about every possession down the stretch. The Eagles would hit 16-of-27 attempts in the second half and hold the Lancers down on the defensive end for the win.
Biola didn't have its best shooting night of the season, but did hit a respectable 47.5 percent in the game. On defense, though, the Eagles were impressive. Biola blocked nine shots, recorded eight steals and out-rebounded the Lancers 37-32 including 29 defensive rebounds. Cal Baptist shot just 33.3 percent in the contest including hitting only 8-of-28 from the field in the first half.
Justus Von Wright led the Lancers with 15 points with Davey Hopkins adding 11 and Cesar Menjivar contributing 10 points in the loss.
Cal Baptist was just unable to figure out the Biola defense all season, hitting just 33.7 percent and averaging 47.7 points in three Eagle victories this year.
The Eagles advance to the GSAC Semifinals for the first time since the 2001-02 season, despite reaching the tournament in each season since then. As an added bonus, Biola hosts the GSAC Semifinals and Finals this season.
The first semifinal will feature the Eagles and Cougars at 5:30 p.m. Biola swept the season series with Azusa Pacific for the first time in nine years, and will be looking to beat its arch-rival three times in one season for the first time since 1983-84. Azusa Pacific easily dispatched The Master's College on Thursday night, winning 80-56.
The other semifinal will tip at 7:30 p.m. and pit No. 1 Concordia against No. 4 Fresno Pacific, both of which survived first-round scares. Concordia needed a late steal and layup to secure a 74-69 home victory over No. 8 seed Point Loma Nazarene. Fresno Pacific used a big second half to knock off upstart Westmont 94-89 in Fresno.
The winner of the two semifinals will meet in the GSAC Championship game on Tuesday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m.
