COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Biola picked up a pair of big GSAC road victories on Saturday, defeating conference foe Vanguard University 4-2 and 6-1 at the VU Softball Field.
The wins move Biola to 16-10, but more importantly, move the Eagles to third in the conference at 6-4, just two games behind second-place Point Loma Nazarene and one game ahead of Tuesday's opponent, Concordia University.
The Eagles once again got strong pitching performances from
Lyndsie Roberts and
Kristin Larson. Roberts allowed just two runs on eight hits over seven innings to earn the victory in game one, while Larson scattered four hits and allowed an unearned run to win the second game.
Game one got off to a bit of a rocky start for Roberts, who allowed a run in each of the first two innings. The first opened with a hit batter, sacrifice fly and an RBI-single by Stephanie Leisenring. However, despite putting two on with one out, Roberts worked out of the jam.
Biola got that one run back and more with a four-run second as the first five batters in the inning reached base.
Krista Johnson got things going with a single followed by a single off the bat of Roberts. After
Chelsea Limm walked to load the bases,
Morgan Facchini drove home the tying run with a single with Roberts scoring on a Vanguard error.
Erin DaSilva then drove in two more with a double.
Vanguard scored its second run of the game in the bottom of the second to close the gap to two, thanks to a two-out, RBI-single by Amanda Omahen.
But despite putting a runner on base in each of the final five innings including the leadoff batter in four of those innings, the Lions were unable to get any closer. Roberts, despite not pitching her best game of the year, worked out of all of the jams to earn the victory.
In the second game, Biola took advantage of sloppy play by the Lions to cruise to the sweep. In the first, the Eagles put runners at first and second with two out, but a routine grounder to short looked like it would end the inning. But the ball was misplayed and allowed the Eagles to get on the board first.
The second inning was nearly the same story as a two-out infield error opened the gates for the Eagles.
Sara Smith made Vanguard pay for the miscue with an RBI-single, then
Krista Johnson broke it open with a two-run double to make it a 4-0 game.
The Lions scored on a Biola miscue to make it 4-1.
The score would remain the same over the next five innings until the Eagles scored a pair of late insurance runs as Facchini and DaSilva drove in runs.
Every Biola starter got a hit in the doubleheader as the Eagles pounded out 14 hits and 10 runs.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday (March 23) at 2:00 p.m. on Freedom Field, hosting No. 11 Concordia University in a GSAC doubleheader.
