LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola received strong pitching and timely hitting en route to an impressive sweep over arch-rival Azusa Pacific University, winning 4-1 and 4-0 in a GSAC doubleheader at Freedom Field on Tuesday.
The Eagles improve to 14-10 on the year and to 4-4 in conference play while dropping the Cougars to 13-13, 2-6 in GSAC.
Lyndsie Roberts picked up a win and a save, allowing just three hits and one run in 8-1/3 innings over the two games.
Meanwhile, a home run by
Krista Johnson provided a large portion of the offense in the first game while Roberts helped herself out with a two-run single in the seventh inning of game two.
In game one, Biola struck early with three in the first inning.
Jillian Storm led off the game with a single, stole second and came around to score on a two-out single by
Sara Smith. Johnson then stepped up and sent a blast over the fence to make it a 3-0 lead.
The score would stay that way until the top of the fourth when the Cougars were finally able to get to Roberts. Back-to-back singles opened the inning for Azusa Pacific and the Cougars would load the bases with one out. Roberts forced an infield groundout and got the second out at the plate, but then walked in a run before a strikeout ended the inning.
That would be the only inning Azusa Pacific would threaten as the Cougars would have just two baserunners the rest of the game, one on a walk and the other on an error.
Meanwhile the Eagles would add one more run with two doubles, the first by Johnson and the second by
Morgan Facchini to cap the scoring.
Roberts earned the win to improve to 7-5 while Rita Kim took the loss for APU and dropped to 1-5.
In the second game, the Eagles were able to again get an early run, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. Storm drew a walk to open the game and was moved around to third on consecutive infield outs. She would come around to score on a passed ball, the pitch before the Cougars got a final ground out ot end the inning.
Despite having runners on base in six of the seven innings, Azusa Pacific was unable to get a run in the second game, leaving 11 runners on base in the game.
Biola was unable to figure out Cougar starter Taryn Davish, who did not allow a hit over five innings pitched. However, after walking the lead-off batter in the bottom of the sixth, she was pulled for Mariah Worley. With Davish out of the game, Biola's offense came alive.
The first batter Worley faced was Storm, who got on with a bunt single, putting runners on the corners. Gandy then loaded the bases with an infield single, though
Leslie Larson, who as on third, was unable to score.
Brittany Bury then drove in a run with a single down the left-field line and Roberts plated two more with a single before being thrown out at second base.
Kristen Larson picked up the win to improve to 6-5. She allowed just six hits over 6-1/3 inning before giving way to Roberts who picked up the save, her first of the year.
Storm finished the day going 3-for-5 with a walk, scoring three of the team's eight runs. Roberts and Johnson each went 2-for-6 and each drove in a pair of runs.
Biola returns to action on Saturday (Mar. 20), traveling to face Vanguard University at Noon in Costa Mesa.
