Danny Campbell

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior guard Danny Campbell scored 22 points for the third time in his last six games and fellow senior guard Marlon King eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career as Biola used a second-half rally to down Vanguard 75-68 in a GSAC game on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles rebound from just their second loss of the season with the victory and improve to 21-2 on the season and remain in a first-place tie with Concordia at 11-2 in conference play. Vanguard drops to 4-15 overall and to 3-10 in GSAC action.

Campbell connected on 6-of-9 from the field including 5-of-6 from three-point land, adding five free throws to record 22 points for the third time in his last six games. Campbell is averaging 18.6 points over that stretch.

King scored 11 points to give him 1,001 points in his four-year career with the Eagles, making him the 22nd player in school history to reach the mark. He joins Rocky Hampton as the two current players reach the mark, though Campbell is just 24 points away after tonight's performance. King was 5-of-8 from the field and collected nine of his 11 in the second half.

The first half proved to be one to forget for the Eagles, though it was thrilled the 300 or so Vanguard fans which made the trip up for the game. Biola hit just 37.9 percent from the field to the Lions' 48.3 percent which also included five three-pointers.

The two teams traded barbs over the first 15 minutes of the half with each matching the other's output. Vanguard, however, owned the next two minutes, using an 11-2 run which featured three three-pointers to take a 31-24 lead. The Lions would maintain that lead the rest of the half and held a 35-28 lead at intermission.

After what must have been a rousing halftime speech, Biola came out firing, opening the half with a 19-4 run to take a 44-39 lead at the 14:14 mark. Vanguard cut the lead to two on a three-pointer by Drew Bruns with 10:10 to go, but the Eagles responded with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 63-51 lead with 6:41 left.

The Lions would close the gap again, using a 9-2 run capped by a three-pointer by Billy Azizi to make it a 65-60 game with just over four minutes to go. However, on the ensuing possession, Campbell stopped the run with a deep three-pointer to stretch the lead back to five. Vanguard would get the score back to within five in the final two minutes only to see Josh Miller connect on a three-pointer with 1:09 to go to seal the deal.

Biola connected on 6-of-10 from three-point range in the second half and hit 17-of-26 (65.4 percent) from the field over the final 20 minutes. The Eagles shot 50.9 percent overall in the game while holding Vanguard to just 42.6 percent shooting including 37.5 percent in the second half.

Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 9), hosting No. 17 and arch-rival Azusa Pacific University in a GSAC game at Chase Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to begin around 7:30 p.m. All fans in attendance will require a ticket for admission.
