Biola Downs San Diego Christian in Four

Rachel Buckley had five blocks and no errors for the Eagles

EL CAJON, Calif. --- Despite a rocky second set, Biola completely dominated the other three sets, defeating San Diego Christian College 25-15, 22-25, 25-12, 25-15 in a GSAC match Tuesday night at the Ryan Athletic Center in El Cajon.

The victory was the seventh-straight for the Eagles, who improve to 16-4 on the season and to 8-1 in GSAC play. The Hawks fall to 8-10 overall and to 1-8 in the conference.

The match turned out to be a tough one for Biola as San Diego Christian proved to be a difficult opponent, especially in the second set.

The Eagles used a 12-2 run to break a 13-13 tie and cruise to an easy victory in the first set. It looked like the team would carry that momentum into the second, jumping out to a quick 6-1 lead. As Biola was about to go up 7-1 on a kill by Christine Douglas, a bad call on the attack gave the point instead to San Diego Christian. That keyed a 10-1 Hawks run which Biola was never able to recover from.

After a stern talk between sets, the Eagles came out on fire in the third. Biola broke a 4-4 tie with 13-2 run, taking a commanding 17-6 lead and cruise to the win. The story was similar in the fourth as the Eagles quickly rode out to an 18-8 lead before winning 25-15.

Douglas finished with 11 kills to pace Biola while senior middle blocker Tavea Hampton added nine. Both had three blocks in the match. Sophomore Rachel Buckley recorded three kills in eight swings with no errors and contributed five blocks including one solo. Senior outside hitter Amy Mosebar also had a strong night with seven kills two digs and a block.

Hampton's nine kills put her over the 500-kill plateau for her career, giving her 506 in four years. She currently ranks second in career hitting percentage at .344 and is eighth in blocks per set with 0.94.

Lauren Howard led the Hawks with 16 kills while Kim McCalmont added nine and eight digs.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday (Oct. 9), hosting No. 14 Point Loma Nazarene University in a GSAC match beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
