BOX SCORE
COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Junior forward Rocky Hampton scored a game-high 19 points including seven of Biola's final 10 points as the Eagles came from behind for a 71-63 road win over Vanguard University in a GSAC game on Saturday night.
Biola picks up its fourth win in its last five games to improve to 17-6 overall and improves to 8-5 in conference play. The Lions fall to 5-16 overall and to 4-9 in the GSAC.
Hampton put together another strong game, though it took him a while to get started. The junior was just 2-for-8 in the first half, scoring five points through the first 20 minutes. But he responded with 14 points in the second half including seven in the final five minutes.
Hampton was one of five Biola players to reach double-figures in the game. Sophomores Josh Miller and Nate Rakestraw and junior Derick Sumpter each scored 12 points while junior Marlon King added 10.
Biola struggled to start out the game, falling behind 25-15 just under 10 minutes into the game. But the Eagles used a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to take their first lead of the contest at 29-25. Biola would lead by as many as five before settling for a 34-33 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the teams continued their see-saw battle with neither team leading by more than three points through the first 10 minutes. Vanguard broke a 48-48 tie with a short 8-2 run to open up a six-point lead with just 8:14 to play. But Biola tied the score with two buckets by Hampton and another by Miller just three minutes later.
Vanguard would score the next basket to go up 58-56, but Biola would respond with a 10-1 run capped by a Hampton three-point play to put the Eagles up seven with 1:32 to play. The Lions would close within three but after running down the shot clock, Rakestraw hit a layup to make it a two-possession ballgame with 31 seconds to go and wrap up the game.
Alex Chapman scored 17 points off the bench to pace Vanguard while Brandon Glenn added 14. Gregory Scott scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds for the Lions, but was just 3-of-11 from the field.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 12) in what will be a crucial GSAC contest against arch-rival Azusa Pacific University. The Eagles wrap up the night in a fourth-place tie, one game behind the Cougars in the conference standings after APU defeated Cal Baptist 86-83 in overtime on Saturday night.
