No. 4 Biola Sweeps No. 5 Point Loma in Dominating Fashion

SAN DIEGO --- Senior outside hitter Meghan Warkentin had 11 kills and four blocks to lead No. 4 Biola to an impressive 25-10, 25-18, 25-17 sweep over No. 5 Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday night, giving the Eagles their first win at Golden Gymnasium since 1999.

The Eagles continue their winning streak, running their record to 14-0 on the season and 4-0 in GSAC play. The Sea Lions drop to 9-3 and 1-3 in the conference.

Biola picked up its first victory in San Diego over Point Loma Nazarene since the 1999 season. The Eagles were 0-10 in matches against the Sea Lions over that stretch.

Despite the billing of a No. 4 vs. No. 5, the match never really was in doubt. Biola jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set, then broke the set wide open with a 13-3 run and cruised to a 25-10 win. The Eagles came out hot, hitting .346 in that first set while holding Point Loma to a -.075 attack percentage.

Things continued to go Biola's way in the second as an early 9-4 run gave the Eagles a 15-8 advantage en route to a 25-18 win in the set.

Biola wrapped the match up with another dominating performance in the third, running up a 17-7 lead before Point Loma was able to string together many points. The Eagles would wrap up the match with a 25-17 win in the final set.

Biola used a balanced attack between its middles and outside hitters. The middle blockers recorded 18 of the kills while the outsides had 21. Senior middle blocker Kristen Peterson had a strong match with eight kills and just one error in 13 attacks, adding five blocks and a dig for the Eagles. Junior middle blocker Kelsey Christoferson added nine kills with one error in 13 attacks and two blocks.

On the outside, Warkentin had a match-high 11 kills without an error in 24 attacks, recording four blocks including one solo, and adding two digs and a pair of assists.

Biola had a great match on defense, posting a total of 12 blocks and holding Point Loma to an attack percentage of .038 on the night. Leading the defense was junior libero Katie Stevens, who recorded a match-high 14 digs. Meanwhile, the Eagles recorded a .309 attack percentage, committing just nine attack errors.

Biola returns to the court on Tuesday (Sept. 23), hosting Hope International University in a 7:00 p.m. match at Chase Gymnasium.
