Sweep Start to Season for Biola Volleyball

Meghan Warkentin posted 16 kills and no errors in Biola's first match

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola's 2008 volleyball season got off to a strong start on Friday afternoon as the Eagles cruised to a pair of three-game sweeps at the 2008 Azusa Pacific Cougar Classic.

Biola (2-0) opened the day with a 25-15, 25-11, 25-18 win over Eastern Oregon then wrapped up the first day of action with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-14 victory over the University of Great Falls (Mont.).

A quartet of seniors led the way for the Eagles with Meghan Warkentin recording 26 kills in the two matches. Kelsey Mitchell and Kristen Peterson added 16 kills each with Jessica Buffum recording 14.

In the first match, Biola had one of the best hitting matches in recent memory, recording 53 kills with just five hitting errors in 109 total attacks for a .440 hitting percentage. Warkentin led the way with 16 kills and no hitting errors while Buffum, sophomore Kelsey Christoferson and senior Maggie McGill also had perfect hitting games with seven, seven and six kills, respectively.

In the secong match, Biola recovered from a shaky start in the first set and broke away late thanks to strong serving by freshman Joy Talcott to win 25-21. McGill served out five straight points to break an 11-11 tie in the second set en route to a 25-20 win, then Biola cruised to a relatively easy 25-14 win to seal the match.

The Eagles return to the courts on Saturday to face the Indiana Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m. and Daemen University (N.Y.) at 1:00 p.m.
