Gularte's Late Goal Lifts Biola to 1-0 Win in Season-Opener

Megan Gularte netted the lone goal for Biola

BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior Megan Gularte scored on a low shot through traffic in the 82nd minute to lift Biola to a 1-0 win over Viterbo University in a non-conference match Wednesday night.

The Eagles (1-0-0) completed dominated the game from start to finish but could not manage to get the ball into the back of the net. Biola finished the game with an 18-1 advantage in shots over the V-Hawks (0-1-0) and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.

Gularte accounted for a team-high five shots and had a pair Biola's best chances early on. In the 22nd minute, she gathered a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a shot which just sailed wide of the net. With 12 minutes to play before the half, Gularte had another great look from just outside the box which forced the Viterbo keeper to make a great save.

The Eagles had another opportunity just moments before Gularte's goal as sophomore defender Caitlin Peterson headed a ball toward a wide open net off a Biola corner kick. However, that ball missed just wide of the goal and the game would remain knotted at 0-0.

Sophomore netminder Lauren Gregston needed to make just one save in the game, hauling in a soft shot from about 35 yards out. She earns her first win of the season and posts the fourth clean sheet of her Biola career.

The Eagles improve to 10-4-3 all-time in home openers with the win and are now 7-6-4 in season-opening games. The victory was also the first for first-year head coach Todd Elkins, who took over the program in July.

Biola returns to action on Saturday (Aug. 23), traveling to Cal State San Bernardino for a scrimmage beginning at 4:00 p.m.
