Mitchell Records 1,000th Kill as Biola Sweeps The Master's

Kelsey Mitchell became the 10th Eagle to reach 1,000 kills

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior Kelsey Mitchell recorded 10 kills to push her over the 1,000 kill plateau for her career at Biola, helping the Eagles to a 25-21, 25-13, 25-20 win over The Master's College in a GSAC match on Saturday night.

The Eagles, who enter the contest ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, improve to 25-3 on the season and are now 15-3 in GSAC play while the Mustangs fall to 9-17 overall and 3-15 in the conference.

Everything was coming up 10 for Mitchell on Saturday night. The senior, who wears No. 10, recorded 10 kills on the night to become the 10th player in school history to reach 1,000 kills at Biola. It was her second-straight match with 10 kills.

Fellow senior outside hitter Meghan Warkentin recorded a match-high 13 kills to lead the Eagles, adding 10 digs, an ace and a block on the night.

Biola had a tough time with The Master's in the first and third games, but cruised without much trouble in the second.

The Mustangs held a 16-13 lead near the middle of the first set. But Biola would rally on the strong serving of sophomore setter Abbie Wright, who rattled off seven-straight points for the Eagles and put the home team back on top 20-16. Biola would allow the Mustangs to get no closer than three the rest of the way.

In the second, Biola jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead, stretching it to 21-8 before settling for the 25-13 win. The Eagles could do little wrong in the set, posting a .462 attack percentage and holding the Mustangs to -.056.

But the Master's did not go away quietly as the two teams went back and forth in the third set. There were 14 ties and four lead changes through the first half until Biola rattled of six-straight points to turn a 17-16 deficit into a 21-17 edge. Senior outside hitter Maggie McGill served well, earning one ace and forcing a number of overpasses on the others.

Rachel Roleder led The Master's with 11 kills and added 15 digs while Jenna Kapuscinski added eight kills and 12 digs.

McGill recorded five kills and a team-high 16 digs for Biola, adding two blocks and an ace. Senior setter Christina Perkins recorded 17 assists and nine digs while Wright contributed 16 assists, nine digs and two aces.

Biola closes out the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday (Nov. 11), hosting arch-rival and No. 6-ranked Azusa Pacific at 7:00 p.m. Prior to the match, Biola's six seniors will be honored during senior night festivities.
