LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola University Head Volleyball Coach Aaron Seltzer has announced the addition of four players to his roster for the 2007 season, comprised of an NCAA Division I transfer and three incoming freshman.
Headlining the incoming group is junior Jessica Buffum (San Jose/Lynbrook HS), a transfer from NCAA Division I Georgetown University. Buffum led the Hoyas 340 kills (3.58 per game) and added 248 digs (2.62/game) as to lead Georgetown to an 8-19 record. As a freshman, Buffum recorded 117 kills (1.98/game) and added three double-doubles.
Prior to Georgetown, Buffum was a standout player at San Jose's Lynbrook High School. She was a four-year starter with the Vikings, earning all-Santa Clara Valley Athletic League honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. She was also a member of the City Beach Club Volleyball team for seven seasons, helping them win gold, silver and two bronze medals at the USA Junior National Championships.
“Jessica is very explosive on the outside and will bring a ton of experience and playing time with her,” said Seltzer. “We expect her to compete on the outside and play a big part during her final two years.”
Biola will also add three freshmen to the ranks. They are middle blocker Amy Mosebar (Manhattan Beach/Redondo Union HS), outside hitter/middle blocker Tavea Hampton (Canyon Lake/Temescal Canyon HS) and defensive specialist Lindsay Dietzen (Moses Lake, WA/Moses Lake Christian Academy).
Mosebar helped Redondo Union to a stunning upset win over No. 1 Mira Costa in the CIF Southern Section finals, helping the Sea Hawks to a 31-8 record and the first volleyball sectional title in school history. During that match, Mosebar recorded seven kills and three blocks in the thrilling five-game match. She posted her best career stats in Redondo Union's quarterfinal win over Clovis, recording 13 kills in the four-game win. Overall, she recorded 200 kills, 86 blocks, 107 digs and 42 service aces during her senior season.
“We were very fortunate to land Amy,” said Seltzer. “With her athleticism she can play multiple positions as well. She jumps as well as any girl we have ever had and plays the net very intelligently. We are expecting big things out of her and can't wait to have her join the program.”
Mosebar, who plans on majoring in education, is the daughter of former all-pro NFL offensive lineman Don Mosebar, who played 13 seasons for the Los Angeles Raiders.
Hampton comes to Biola out of Temescal Canyon High School where she was a three-time All-Southwestern League pick and two-time team MVP while playing for the Titans. She was also a standout basketball player, leading her team to a CIF Southern Section title in 2006.
“From the first time we saw her we definitely wanted her here,” said Seltzer. “Tevea is very versatile and has played both on the outside and middle. We loved her ability to control the net and her flexibility at various positions. We expect her to be a big contributor during her four years here.”
Hampton's older brother Rocky is a starting forward on the Biola basketball team.
Dietzen was a two-time all-state player at Moses Lake Christian Academy in Washington State, earning first-team all-state, first-team all-league and league MVP honors as a senior. Dietzen, who comes from quite an athletic family, joins her older brothers Nick and Derek, who are both members of the Biola baseball team.
“Lindsay is a very fundamentally solid player and her personality and demeanor on the court will absolutely fit in with this team,” said Seltzer. “From the first time she ever worked out with us, she was a hit with everyone. We are excited to see how she develops over the next four years.”
Biola finished the 2006 season with a record of 20-12, reaching the first round of the NAIA Region II Playoffs.
