No. 16 Biola Sweeps McPherson College in Non-Conference Showdown

LA VERNE, Calif. --- Sophomore Meghan Scheenstra recorded 25 kills in 44 attempts with just three errors to lead No. 16 Biola to a 30-7, 30-24, 30-23 sweep over McPherson College in a non-conference match played at the University of La Verne on Friday afternoon.

The Eagles improve to 13-10 overall with the victory while McPherson drops to 13-9.

Biola had little trouble in the first game, jumping out to a quick 13-4 lead and rolling to a 30-7 win. The Eagles out-swung McPherson by a .485 to -.233 margin in the first game.

The Bulldogs woke up a bit in the second game and led early by an 11-8 before Biola started to chip away and scored its first lead at 13-12. The teams battled back and forth before the Eagles went on a 10-4 run to break open the match and hold on for the win.

In the final game, the two teams again started on a back-and-forth pace. With the score tied at 10, Biola started to break away as freshman libero Katie Stevens served five straight points highlighted by three kills from Scheenstra.

The Eagles had a .355 attack percentage in the match to McPherson's .094 but struggled on serve, committing 12 service errors.

Scheenstra's 25 kills were one more than the Bulldogs had as a team (24) thanks to Biola's excellent defense. The Eagles didn't surrender a kill until Jessica Miller slammed one down to make the score 22-6 in game one.

Scheenstra hit .500 for the match as did junior Brittany Wing, who had nine kills and one error in 16 total attacks.

Middle blocker Meghan Cunningham had a season-best 12 kills in 22 attacks with two errors for a .455 attack percentage. Cunningham is coming off an 11 kill performance in Tuesday's five-game loss at Azusa Pacific.

Biola returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 20) for a home GSAC contest against No. 3 Cal Baptist at 7:00 p.m.
