Robert Matthew joined Head Coach Sean Henning's staff in fall of 2018 to assist with the Track & Field program as a jumps/multi-events coach.
During his first year at Biola he coached three NCAA Division II provisional qualifiers, one all-conference athlete, three NCCAA All-Americans and two NCCAA Champions.
Matthew was a NCAA Division I track & field athlete at Grand Canyon University from 2011-14 and was a four-time all-conference competitor in the Western Athletic Conference. He was a three-time NCAA National Qualifier and six-time Academic All-American.
He helped lead the Lopes to the 2012 NCAA Division II national championship and 2013 PacWest Conference championship prior to GCU's transition to NCAA Division I.
Matthew also had a standout high school track & field team. He helped lead the program to a 2010 Arizona High School state championship.
After his competition career ended, he began his coaching career and spent 2015-18 as a coach at Chandler High School in Arizona. He coached three USA Junior Outdoor Championship Qualifiers, two New Balance All-Americans, the 2017-18 Gatorade Girls Track & Field Arizona Athlete of the Year and helped a student-athlete set the state record in the long jump. His girl's team won the state championship each year from 2016-18 and the boy's side won the state title in 2016-17.
Matthew has his USATF Level 1 Certification and attended the USATFÂ Emerging Elite coaching camp. He also has a USATF Level 2 certification in coaching combined events.
When not coaching he enjoys reading, playing with his dogs, Layla and Nala, and spending time with his wife, Nequa. He holds a Bachelor's of Science in Sports Management (2014) and a MBA (2015).
