Athletic Training Resources

What athletic training is, who certified athletic trainers are, and where to find the professional organizations that govern the field. Biola University is a Christian university in La Mirada, California, competing in NCAA Division II across seventeen varsity programs, all of them covered by our sports medicine staff.

The profession

Two things worth understanding before you read further.

What athletic training is

Athletic training is the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions, whether those are emergencies, sudden injuries or long-term problems. It is recognized as an allied health care profession by the American Medical Association, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Department of Health and Human Services. The National Athletic Trainers' Association maintains the profession's definitions and standards.

Who athletic trainers are

Certified athletic trainers are multi-skilled health care professionals who work under the direction of, or in collaboration with, a physician, within the limits of their education and their state's regulations. As part of a health care team they provide primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergency care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Their professional conduct is governed by the NATA Code of Ethics.

Athletic trainers are often confused with personal trainers, but the education, the skill set, the duties and the patients are all different. Athletic training follows the medical model, and entry into the profession now requires graduating from an accredited master's program.

What that looks like at Biola

Six certified athletic trainers, a director of sport performance and a team physician cover all seventeen Biola varsity programs. They travel with high-risk sports, staff home competitions, run rehabilitation on site, and handle medical clearance for every student-athlete before a season begins. Meet the sports medicine staff.
