10K Titles Highlight Opening Day

Ebright and Von Molendorff claim 10K titles as Biola posts nine All-PacWest performances on opening day

SAN DIEGO, Calif.---The Biola track & field teams opened competition at the PacWest Championships with nine All-PacWest performances and two individual champions.

Melt von Molendorff and Maddie Ebright were PacWest Conference champs for the men's and women's 10,000m runs. Von Moldendorff defended his title in the men's 10k, finishing with a time of 31:58.73 and Ebright won the women's event with a time of 36:29.13. 

Hope Willis was the only Eagle to secure two podium finishes, recording second in the javelin (41.07m) and third in the discus (48.63m). 

Biola had four athletes earn Second Team All-PacWest honors including: Faith Winningham in the hammer throw (47.84m), Colby Shamblin in the javelin (65.38m), Claire Lesiw in the 10k (36:34.73) and Willis in the javelin.

BU totaled three third place finishes including: Eboselulu Omofoma in the long jump (5.59m), Elizabeth Kurtz in the 3000m steeplechase (11:00.09) and Willis in the discus. 

Ten more Eagles added points to their team scores including: Elias Voris (6th, men's javelin), Marco Smith (8th, men's long jump), Caleb Pook (5th, men's pole vault), Nina Navarrette (8th, women's pole vault), Kaiden Gonzales (6th, men's discus), Norah DeYoung (7th, women's discus), Carter Hawley (5th, men's 3000 steeplechase), Jaina Kang (5th, women's 3000 steeplechase), Zachary Wallace (5th, men's 10k) and James Rieckewald-Schmidt (6th, men's 10k).

Biola earned their highest point totals in the men's and women's 10k, with the men scoring 17 points and the women totaling 18 in the event.

Nineteen Eagles punched their tickets to Saturday's finals, highlighted by a strong showing in the women's 1500m where Hailey Wurzbach, Bethany Mapes, Kang, and Ellie Dimitrashchuk all advanced.

Five athletes qualified for finals in two events including: Joshua Widdows (110H, 400H), Omofoma (100H, 400H), Hannah Hanson (100H, 400H), Quinn Shavey (400, 200) and Matthew Kaloustian (100, 200).

Omofoma recorded top performances in the prelims of the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles, finishing first in both the 100H (13.65) and 400H (1:00.69).

In the men's 100 prelims, Tommy sprinted to a first-place finish (10.44), with Kaloustian close behind in second (10.47).


The Eagles finished the day with solid team standings. Biola's women was third of seven teams with 62 points and the men were tied for third of six with 40 points.

Biola will finish the PacWest Championships tomorrow Saturday, April 25th at the PLNU Track & Field.
