On a Roll

Biola collected their sixth-straight win with their 61-44 victory over UHH.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola women's basketball team defeated Hawai'i Hilo 61–44 on Thursday evening at Chase Gym.

"Once again our defense was solid and sound and got us the win," stated head coach Mike Simonson. "We will always hang our hat on defense and tonight is a testament to that. Hilo is a tough competitor and they came ready to play. They made it tough with their inside post game and 3pt shooting."

The Eagles won the first quarter battle, ending the frame with a three point lead over the Vulcans (18-15). The game was tied four times in the quarter, the last time being at 15-15 with 45 seconds remaining. Biola went on a five-point run to earn the three-point advantage heading into the second quarter. The Eagles had a balanced scoring effort in the first frame, Hanne Nybo and Aliyah Bantolina led their team with four points. Jaycee Goldsmith and Danya Dykstra recorded three points each and Laney Grider contributed two.

Biola created separation in the second quarter behind strong defensive execution. The Eagles held Hawaiʻi Hilo to just five points in the period while limiting the Vulcans to 2-for-10 shooting. Meanwhile, Biola continued to find consistent scoring opportunities, outscoring Hilo 14–5 in the quarter to take a 32–20 lead into halftime.

Hawaiʻi Hilo attempted to rally in the third quarter, putting together their most productive offensive stretch of the night with 18 points. However, the Eagles answered key scoring runs with timely baskets and free throws to maintain control. Biola carried a 46–38 advantage into the final period.

"We did a great job not panicking when Hilo made their runs and always felt like we had control of the game. Kudos to our poise and maturity," said Simonson. "Alyssa Kubo gave us great minutes tonight. I was really proud of how she took care of the ball and picked great moments to attack."

The Eagles sealed the victory in the fourth quarter through strong defense and clutch free throw shooting. Biola limited Hilo to just six points in the final frame while converting 9-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe. The Eagles outscored the Vulcans 15–6 in the quarter to secure the 61–44 win.

Grace Moyers led Biola's offense with 12 points, knocking down three three-pointers and finishing a perfect 3-for-3 at the free throw line. Hanne Nybo followed with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Alyssa Kubo added eight points and three assists, while Laney Grider contributed seven points, four rebounds and two steals. Biola also received key bench production from Danya Dykstra and Camden Miller, who each scored six points. Jaycee Goldsmith controlled the glass with nine rebounds and dished out three assists.

As a team, Biola outrebounded Hawaiʻi Hilo 44–30. Biola's bench stepped up big against the Vulcans, contributing 22 bench points.

With the victory, Biola improved to 12–8 overall and 9–6 in the PacWest Conference, while Hawaiʻi Hilo dropped to 5–16 overall and 3–13 in conference competition.

"We are very excited to play in front of our alumni on Saturday and showcase how much we've improved," concluded Simonson.
