BU Scores First Against Ranked Cougars

Eagles struck first but it wasn’t enough to cool off the Cougars.

SAN MARCOS, Calif.---The Biola softball team put up three runs against the nationally-ranked No. 3 Cal State San Marcos Cougars at the CSUSM Softball Field.

The Eagles lost their second game of the day 6-3 to Cal State San Marcos, but showed improvement after losing their first game in a six-inning shutout.

Biola scored first, recording two runs in the first inning. Jackie Ibarra drew a leadoff walk to get things started, and Alexa Medley Sheard moved her into scoring position. Lizzie Byer followed with a single to left field, advancing Ibarra to third. Kendall Nakano then drove in BU's first run with a single through the left side. The Eagles added another later in the frame off a defensive error.

The Cougars responded in the second inning with five runs and then added an insurance run in the fourth.

The Eagles managed to score one more run in the top of the seventh. Lily Rodriguez entered as a pinch hitter to lead off the inning and worked a walk to spark a rally. Leilani Salgado came back in to run for Rodriguez and moved into scoring position during Ibarra's at-bat before advancing to third on a passed ball. Salgado later crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Medley.

Lillianna Garcia started the game in the circle and threw two innings, allowing the Cougars five runs to score and four hits. Kayla Bousquette closed the game and allowed CSUSM just one hit and one more run to score. Bousquette also struck out three.

Biola plays next on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 12 and 2 p.m.
