Eagles Push Penguins to Overtime

Hanne Nybo records a career night in an overtime loss to Dominican.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team battled through five periods but ultimately fell 82–79 in overtime to Dominican on Wednesday evening at the Conlan Center.

The Eagles entered the fourth quarter facing a deficit but pieced together an impressive comeback fueled by efficient offense and timely shot-making. Laney Grider ignited the rally with aggressive drives and confident perimeter shooting, highlighted by a game-tying three-pointer with under three minutes remaining. Biola later surged ahead when Alyssa Kubo knocked down a clutch three with 30 seconds left, but Dominican countered with a late basket to even the score at 72–72 and force overtime.

Biola carried its momentum into the extra period, striking first as Grider finished a layup in the paint to give the Eagles a 74–72 advantage. Dominican quickly responded with consecutive baskets to reclaim the lead at 76–74. Kubo answered once again, tying the contest with a layup three possessions later, but the Penguins regained control with another pair of back-to-back scores to stretch the margin to five points, 81–76.

Kubo kept the Eagles within reach with a clutch three-pointer late in overtime, but Dominican sealed the outcome at the free-throw line and held Biola scoreless on its final possession to secure the victory.

Biola opened the game with strong offensive execution, shooting 50 percent from the field in the first quarter and building an early rhythm behind inside scoring from Hanne Nybo and Grace Moyers. The Eagles carried that momentum into the second quarter, connecting on 64.3 percent of their shots while knocking down three triples to take a 35–34 lead into halftime.

Dominican shifted momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Biola 23–16 while capitalizing on efficient shooting and transition opportunities. The Eagles responded in the fourth quarter with their most efficient offensive frame of the night, shooting 61.5 percent from the field and scoring 21 points to erase the deficit and force overtime.

Nybo led Biola with a career-high of 20 points and nine rebounds while shooting 9-for-15 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Grider followed with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jaycee Goldsmith added 10 points on an efficient 4-for-5 shooting performance, while Kubo contributed 13 points, including three made three-pointers.

Biola finished the contest shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 39.3 percent from three-point range while recording 17 points off turnovers and 22 bench points.

The Eagles moved to 12–10 overall and 9–8 in PacWest Conference play, while Dominican improved to 18–5 and 12–5 in conference action.

Biola plays next on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 12 p.m. at Menlo College.
