Let's Move On From This One

Biola had some bright spots, but overall will look to wipe the memory of Saturday's game one.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola Baseball saw its momentum briefly slowed on Saturday, dropping the first game of a doubleheader after opening the series with two convincing wins on Friday.

Despite the setback, the Eagles remain in strong position to close out a 3–1 series victory in the nightcap at Eagles' Diamond.

Friday's series-opening sweep set a high bar, as Biola outscored the Regis Rangers 25–11 across two games and saw a new career homerun record (d2 era) set by James Whitman. The first game on Saturday could not meet that high bar. The Rangers exploded out of the gate with a 5-run top of the first inning and just kept pouring on en route to a 19-7 win.

Whitman, looking primed for a monster senior season, remained a bright spot in Saturday's opener, delivering another solid performance at the plate and continuing to anchor the Eagles' lineup. He reached base four times in this one, going 2-for-3 and also walking twice in an effort to help his boys close the gap to Regis.

His RBI and two runs scored helped a bit as Biola managed to put some runs on the board in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. But, the BU offense could not keep up with a Regis team that had 19 hits and only one half-inning where they did not score any runs.

Tommy Kendlinger and Kevin Villegas also managed extra-base hits for Biola, with Kendlinger scoring twice and Villegas putting up a 3-for-4 effort with one run scored. The Eagles managed 10 hits in the game but stranded eight base runners.

Biola used seven pitchers in the game, with Blake Wentz doing most of the work. He carded five full innings and was generally effective in allowing only four runs to the Regis behemoth. The Rangers were able to get base runners on vs. Wentz, but he came up with some big pitches to get out of jams to leave seven Regis runners stranded on base over his five innings. Overall, the visiting team stranded 13 base runners over the nine innings which paints a picture of just how many guys were finding their way on base from start to finish.

While the first game of the doubleheader didn't reflect the standard Biola set the day before, the Eagles now turn their attention to a quick response opportunity in game two on Saturday. A win in the series finale would go a long way towards lifting the spirits of a team that was flying high just a few hours ago.

Biola will look to reset, lean on its early-season offensive consistency, and close out the weekend on a positive note. Follow game four of the series with the live stream at https://www.pacwestnetwork.tv/biola/ and live scoring at https://athletics.biola.edu/sidearmstats/baseball/summary.
