LA MIRADA, Calif.--- The Biola women's basketball team lost a hard-fought 60–52 contest to Vanguard University on Saturday evening at Chase Gym. Grace Moyers shined for Biola, leading their offensive effort with a career-high of 21 points.
Vanguard jumped out to a strong start, holding Biola to eight points in the opening quarter while building a 16–8 advantage. The Eagles struggled to find offensive rhythm early, shooting 3-for-14 from the field in the first frame as the Lions capitalized on extra possessions and defensive pressure.
Biola bounced back in the second quarter. Alyssa Kubo and Moyers knocked down key three-pointers to spark the offense. Kubo led BU's second quarter scoring with six points, going 2-for-4 with two treys made. Despite cutting into the deficit, Vanguard maintained control and carried a 26–21 lead into halftime.
The Eagles came out of the break strong, trimming the gap in the third quarter behind hot shooting from beyond the arc. Biola hit four three-pointers in the period, including a pair from Moyers, but Vanguard answered with timely baskets and extended its lead to 44–36 entering the final frame.
Biola continued to battle in the fourth quarter, scoring their most points of the game as they went toe-to-toe with Vanguard. The Eagles poured in 16 points in the final frame and trimmed the deficit to five on multiple occasions.
Aliyah Bantolina provided a spark inside with a tip-in and a free throw, while Moyers and
Laney Grider each knocked down late three-pointers to keep Biola within striking distance. Despite the push, Vanguard answered with timely transition buckets and free throws down the stretch, holding off the Eagles' rally to secure the win.
Moyers led all scorers with 21 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field and knocked down seven three-pointers. Grider added nine points, four assists, and three steals, while Kubo contributed seven points and five assists. Danya Dykstra anchored the paint with 10 rebounds for the Eagles. Moyers and Jaycee Goldsmith led the Eagles with two blocks each.
Biola moved to 5–5 overall and 2–3 in the PacWest Conference while Vanguard improved to 8-1 and 4-0 in the PacWest. The Eagles look to bounce back in their next conference matchup at APU on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
