A Sneaky Sweep

A close battle favored the Eagles, as they wrapped up their time in Alaska with a sweep of CSUSM.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska --- Biola capped its weekend in Alaska with a second-straight sweep, downing Cal State San Marcos (27–25, 26–24, 25–16) on Saturday morning at the Seawolf Invitational. The win marked back-to-back straight-set victories and evened the Eagles' record at 2-2 heading into their home opener.

The Eagles had to rally in both of the opening frames to seize control. In the first set, Biola overcame an early 6-0 deficit and clawed back point by point behind Juliana Van Ommering and Hannah Guzzetti. After trailing 24-22, the Eagles staved off set point and strung together a 5–1 closing run capped by Guzzetti's kill for a 27-25 win.

Set two followed a similar script as Biola again found itself in tight waters late. Tied 24–24, the Eagles broke through with a Guzzetti kill and then finished the frame 26-24 after forcing an attack error. With momentum firmly in hand, Biola dominated the third. Bri Bellfi's serving sparked an early 7-2 advantage, and the Eagles' block sealed the door as they cruised 25–16 to complete the sweep.

Balanced production defined Biola's victory. Van Ommering paced the attack with 13 kills at a .281 clip, while Madison Moore (nine kills) and Guzzetti (nine kills, .438 hitting) added firepower on offense. Hanson dished out 18 assists and chipped in six kills, while Kendall Vandertuig contributed seven kills, two blocks, and an ace. Defensively, Bri Bellfi dug a match-high 17 balls, and Bethany Bellfi added seven more with a single ace from the service line.

As a team, Biola hit .213 with 48 kills and six blocks, while holding San Marcos to a .107 percentage and just 33 kills. The Eagles' poise in deuce situations made the difference, as they closed both of the opening sets with back-to-back scoring runs.

Biola finished its stay in Anchorage 2-2 and will return home with momentum from a pair of sweeps when it faces Stanislaus State on Thursday at 3:30 pm.
