Home Cooking in Opener

Eagles capitalize in home opener for sweep over Stanislaus State on Thursday.

LA MIRADA --- The home crowd at Chase Gymnasium had plenty to cheer about Thursday afternoon as Biola volleyball stormed to its third-straight sweep, taking down Stanislaus State in convincing fashion (25–16, 25–22, 25–20). The Eagles fed off the energy of their home opener, controlling the match from the first serve and never letting the Warriors find their footing.

Biola wasted no time setting the tone in the opening set. Behind a balanced attack, the Eagles raced to an early 7–2 lead and never looked back, taking the frame 25–16. "It was great to see the girls come out and just be really focused," said Head Coach Brian Failinger. "They did a good job preparing for Stanislaus and just being ready for what was going to come at them."

The second frame proved to be the most competitive of the night. Stanislaus jumped out to an early cushion, but Biola responded with timely kills from Kapustova and Hannah Guzzetti to pull even. A key block from Kapustova and Payton Tully late in the set swung the momentum, and the Eagles closed it out 25–22. "Resilience is one," Failinger said. "In a couple of these sweeps, we were down by pretty big amounts, and it's great to see them weather the storm and stay calm and focused. We had some great comeback wins in certain sets because of that."

Biola finished the night with another efficient showing in the third. Bri Bellfi's serve put Stanislaus under pressure for a quick 3-0 BU lead, and Vandertuig continued to deliver at the net with her match-high 14th kill sealing the 25–20 win.

Kapustova was nearly flawless, finishing with 10 kills on 11 swings (.909) to complement Vandertuig's 14 kills, two aces, and 16.5 points. Hanson contributed eight kills, 16 assists, and nine digs, while Lexi Lambert handed out 22 assists and added two aces.

"We just want to make sure we're being smart with our aggression," Failinger noted. "The mindset to attack is there and that's awesome, but when we can't get good swings, we want to do our best to cause chaos and play clean."

With the win, Biola improved to 3-2 on the season, notching a third-straight sweep and carrying plenty of momentum into a busy weekend at Chase Gymnasium. The Eagles will be right back to it, facing Texas Permian Basin at 9:00 am and Cal State Dominguez Hills at 6:30 pm on Friday.
