Biola Storms Out to Early Lead, Falls 18–13 to #RV Air Force

A battle was won by hosting Air Force on Sunday but the Eagles pushed the Falcons to the brink.

US AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. --- Biola Men's Water Polo closed out its season-opening tournament with a hard-fought 18-13 loss to Air Force, a team receiving votes in the CWPA National Collegiate Men's Water Polo Preseason Poll. Despite the final result, Biola made a statement early, surging to a five-goal lead before the Falcons mounted their comeback.

After conceding the opening goal, Biola responded emphatically. Levi Bengelink, Caleb Hernandez, and Noah Ryznar led a first-quarter onslaught, combining for four goals as the Eagles outpaced the hosts 5-3 by the end of the period. Gavin McKenzie capped the first frame with a slick finish to give Biola momentum heading into the second.

Biola extended its lead early in the second quarter with goals from Beau Gendron, Caden Digby, and a third from Hernandez, pushing the lead to 8-3. The Eagles held Air Force scoreless for nearly four minutes before the Falcons clawed back with four-straight goals to close the gap to 8–7 at halftime.

Despite two second-half goals from Ryznar—including a man-up conversion—and additional strikes from McKenzie, Digby, and Hernandez, Air Force capitalized on a late push to take the lead in the third and seal the win in the fourth with a six-goal burst.

Caleb Hernandez led all Biola scorers with four goals and two assists. Ryznar added three goals, while McKenzie finished with two goals and a pair of assists. Digby contributed two goals as well. McKenzie and Hernandez also tallied one steal apiece.

On the defensive end, Biola's goalkeeping duties were held by John Winters, who made nine saves in a full game effort, while field players combined for three steals, including one from Nick Murray.

Despite the loss, Biola converted three of nine powerplay chances and remained perfect on its lone penalty shot, showing sharpness in set pieces.

Biola wraps up the tournament with a 2-2 record and will now prepare for the Inland Empire Classic set to start on Friday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
