Securing a Spot on Senior Day

The Eagles have earned their spot in the PacWest Tournament with a clinching win in game one on Friday.

LA MIRADA --- It was not smooth sailing but there was no quit for the Eagles (25-25, 22-21 PacWest), who pulled off the incredible comeback on Friday afternoon. Biola and Concordia (22-25, 20-23 PacWest) entered the day vying for the final spot in the PacWest Tournament but the Eagles shut the door and clinched the fourth seed with a 9-8 win over the Golden Eagles in 10 innings.

"I'm so proud of our team," said Head Coach Jesse Rodgers. "The guys love each other, play for each other, and have a ton of toughness and fight. The seniors have been selfless and intentional with our culture and it shows in how we continue to fight even with our backs against the wall."

The celebration began before the first pitch, as 10 Eagles were honored for Senior Day at Eagles Diamond, including Isaiah Leon, Cole Wentz, Josh Eigenbrodt, Noah Ruiz, Andrew Zittel, Tristan Cazel, Kyle Osterhage, Caleb Bennett, Sam Lisiak, and Jack O'Brien.

Concordia stole the thunder once the game was underway. The visitors gradually went to work at the plate, tallying runs in the first, second and fourth frames for a 4-0 lead.

Big swings from the Eagles cut the deficit in half. James Whitman launched his 14th homer of the season with the bases empty to add one. Then, Luke Caruso came to the plate and on the very next pitch sent another hit over the fence for back-to-back BU home runs.

CUI responded by returning its lead to four runs with a tally in the sixth and seventh frames.

The comeback effort returned in the bottom of the eighth for Biola. Three walks in the at bat loaded the bases with two outs on the board. Caruso held the bat in the pressure situation and delivered. The shortstop hit the ball to the fence in left-center for a double to clear the bases, as Whitman snuck under the tag at home. The three RBI base knock put the Eagles within one at 6-5 with one inning to go.

The top of the ninth brought a little wriggle room for Concordia. The Golden Eagles picked up two big hits with two outs to score two for an 8-5 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Biola had its back up against the wall with three outs to go. Jacob Talbott got things moving in the right direction with a leadoff single in the ninth, before two hit-by-pitches loaded the bases. Leon helped the first run of the inning across with an infield single that advanced everyone one base. Adiel Torres was the next threat at the dish and he attacked the first pitch he saw and tied the game. A base hit up the middle scored two for the Eagles, tying the game at eight and forcing extra innings.

Dylan Alanis made sure the top of the 10th went by uneventfully, grabbing three outs on the mound to keep the score stagnant.

The next half inning held Biola's chance to walk it off. Talbott sparked the rally again, reaching via a walk. Josh McAninch came up next and moved Talbott to second with a single to left field.

Ty Cowley was the one to seal it with the walk off hit. The lefty poked a line drive to the gap in left field, easily scoring Talbott from second base for the win.

The win sets up the Eagles for the PacWest Tournament due to start next week on Wednesday. Biola will hold the No. 4 seed and face top-seeded Westmont up in Fresno, California.

"It's been a really special season and we are proud to play playoff baseball for the first time in our D2 era," added Rodgers.

Torres was key for Biola in game one on Friday, landing four hits in six at bats, including a double. Caruso came up clutch, as well, going for two extra-base hits and four RBI.

The Eagles continued the celebration in game two on Friday. Cowley added to his career day, blasting a grand slam in the third inning. Biola posted five runs in the third and one in the fourth, as the team pushed forward for a 6-3 win.
