A Wild One

The Eagles were caught in a wild game one that included a James Whitman grand slam but the team fell to No. 4 Westmont.

LA MIRADA --- The series between Biola (16-18, 13-14 PacWest) and No. 4 Westmont (27-9, 22-7 PacWest) switched fields, as the Eagles hosted Saturday's doubleheader. The third game of the series and the first of the day was a thrilling, back-and-forth affair featuring big swings on both sides. Two runs in the ninth sealed the deal, as Westmont snuck away with the 13-11 win in game one.

The excitement came quickly for Biola behind the bats of Noah Ruiz and James Whitman. The dynamic duo each launched homers in the first inning, putting the Eagles ahead in the first inning.

The two heavyweights began the trading of blows, as the Warriors grabbed three scores between the second and third innings.

Biola evened the game at three in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Adiel Torres.

The offense for the Warriors continued to thrive, resulting in a 7-3 lead by the end of the top of the fifth frame.

The answer for the Eagles came in the bottom of the fifth, as the team loaded the bases with one out. A wild pitch scored the first runner, before Whitman added another RBI to his day with a single through the infield. A sac fly from Tommy Kendlinger brought BU back within one run at 7-6.

Aidan Cube produced big outs in the sixth and seventh, helping put up two zeroes in those frames.

The eighth inning brought the fireworks beginning with Westmont. The visitors turned a single and a walk into three runs with a homer and then took advantage of a BU error to tack on one more to move into a 11-6 edge.

The Eagles proved that no lead is safe for the opposition, as the team rallied in the eighth. Ty Cowley pinch hit and kicked off the frame well with a single to left field. He would eventually come around and score off the bat of Isaiah Leon.

With two outs in the eighth, Whitman came to the dish with the bases jammed and the team down by four on the scoreboard. A fastball down the middle was the first pitch he saw and the last pitch he saw. The ball was gone for a game-tying grand slam.

Whitman ended the day with an incredible stat line, going 5-5 at the plate. He grabbed six RBI along with two homers. The five hits in a single game marked a career-best but it was also his second two-home run effort, matching his previous best, which was coincidentally set against Westmont last year.

The game was dead-locked at 11, entering the ninth but Westmont was ready. The visitors found two singles and a walk to load the bases. Two strikeouts put two outs on the board but the Warriors logged a double in the clutch to claim a 13-11 lead.

Biola battled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, putting two runners on but the third out came with no damage done.

The top of the lineup continued to tear it up for BU. Batters one through four landed 12 of the team's 15 hits with all four offering multi-hit showings. Ruiz went three-for-five in game one, extending his hitting streak to 16, while Adiel Torres grabbed two hits in four at bats to move his hitting streak to 15.

The Eagles and Warriors will battle in game two at Eagles Diamond beginning at approximately 4:00 pm on Saturday.
