Eagles Soar Over Vulcans

The Biola bats were hot in the third game of the series at Eagles Diamond against Hawaii Hilo, taking game one by the score of 10-3.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola Eagles (23-23, 20-19 PacWest) began the day with a bit of rain, but it did not stop them from taking down the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans (10-34, 8-30 PacWest) by a score of 10-3 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Andrew Zittel got the start on the mound for the Eagles and held the Vulcans hitless through his first four innings of work. Zittel recorded his second win of the season in his five innings pitched, allowing two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out two.

The Eagles offense fed off of Zittel's performance through four innings and stepped up to support their pitcher. Adiel Torres led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk, followed by a single from James Whitman and then Ty Cowley took a hit-by-pitch to load the bases for Luke Caruso. Caruso singled to left field, driving in two runs putting the Eagles on the board first. Tommy Kendlinger and Josh McAninch recorded back-to-back singles, tacking on two more to Biola's lead. Ruiz took the second hit-by-pitch of the inning, loading the bases once again. Isaiah Leon stepped up with the bases loaded and logged an infield-single, bringing two more across the plate, putting the Eagles up by six after four frames.

The Vulcans finally seemed to find comfort at the plate in the fifth inning when they drove in two runs on three hits, but still trailed the Eagles 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Caruso led off the fifth with a leadoff walk and was driven in by McAninch with a long shot over the left field fence, giving Biola two more insurance runs.

Biola held onto their 8-2 lead, entering the bottom of the sixth inning and kept on rolling. Leon led off the inning with a no-doubter on the first pitch he saw, putting Biola up by seven. Cowley then recorded an RBI-single to extend the Eagles to double digits.

Both teams dealt a scoreless seventh inning and the Vulcans attempted a late comeback, but they were only able to tack on one more run before the Eagles flew away with the win.

Blake Wentz and John Iacono pitched two innings each, contributing to Biola's big Saturday win. Wentz allowed one hit and no runs while Iacono allowed one unearned run on zero hits and struck out one.

Leon led the Eagles with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, three RBI's, and a home run. The other home run hitter, McAninch, went 2-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Caruso was another offensive contributor to the win, going 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored.

The Eagles are back in action at 4:15 pm as they look to sweep the Vulcans on home territory.
