Eagles Drop Series Finale To Hilo

Biola baseball came up short of a series sweep in a 6-3 loss against Hawaii Hilo, but took the series win at Eagles Diamond.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola Eagles (23-24, 20-20 PacWest) hosted the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans (11-34, 9-30 PacWest) on Saturday afternoon in the final game of a four game series at Eagles Diamond. The Eagles came up short in a 6-3 loss, but logged a series win against Hilo.

The Vulcans turned the page after game one and got on the board first in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Six base hits in the third inning led to Hilo putting up five runs against the Eagles. UHH added on an insurance run in the top of the fourth inning, leading 6-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Eagles made their way onto the scoreboard by stirring up a quick two-out rally, thanks to back-to-back singles. With runners on first and second, Noah Ruiz singled to left field driving in Biola's first run of the game. Isaiah Leon followed up with a single to the right side bringing another run across the plate. Biola was unable to keep their rally going and trailed 6-2, heading into the top of the fifth.

Hit-by-pitches were used to Biola's advantage in the first game and it seemed to carry on into the second. Ruiz led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a hit-by-pitch and ended up scoring Biola's third run, thanks to a sacrifice fly from James Whitman

The Vulcans held onto their 6-3 lead and a scoreless seventh inning from both teams led to Hilo avoiding the sweep and the Eagles falling in the final game of the series at Eagles Diamond.

Leon had an impressive day at the plate in both games of Saturday's doubleheader. In game two, he went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Tommy Kendlinger and Nicholas Whippo were 2-for-4 and Kendlinger scored a run.

The Biola pitching staff went to work in the final game as Gabe Magallan started the game and led the way for Kyle Osterhage, Aidan Cube, Caleb Bennett and Dylan Alanis to wrap up the game. In total, the Eagles struck out eight batters, walked two and allowed six runs on 13 hits.

The Eagles are back at Eagles Diamond on Thursday, May 1st for a doubleheader against Concordia for the final regular season series. First pitch for game one is set for 12 pm.
