Biola Blast Off

Biola baseball took care of business on offense for a mercy-rule win over Fresno Pacific.

LA MIRADA --- The bats were hard at work for Biola baseball in the opening game against Fresno Pacific (19-25, 14-23 PacWest) on Friday afternoon. The runs flooded in as the Eagles (19-21, 16-17 PacWest) wrapped up the game early, with a 18-8 rout of the Sunbirds in a shortened seven inning contest.

James Whitman embodied the winning effort for the Eagles. The cleanup hitter landed five hits in five at bats and scored all five times. He went for three extra-base hits, including two home runs and a double for, while contributing three RBI.

As a team, the BU squad logged 20 hits and a .512 batting average. All nine batters in the lineup picked up at least one base hit with seven offering multiple in the win.

A two-run home run kicked off the festivities, as Whitman gave the Eagles a jolt in the first frame.

FPU battled back and built its own two-run lead with two runs in the second and two in the fourth.

The tidal wave began gaining ground for the Biola offense in the fourth frame. Whitman repeated his effort from the first inning and blasted a solo shot to lead off the BU at bat. Ty Cowley was next to the plate and showed off his power, going back-to-back with his own home run.

With the game knotted at four, Fresno Pacific made a move in the top of the fifth. The visitors tacked on four for an 8-4 lead just past the halfway point in the scheduled nine innings.

A deficit did not faze the Eagles, who retook the lead before recording an out in the bottom of the fifth. It started with a Noah Ruiz single, which was followed by an Isaiah Leon long ball to left field. Four-straight hits aided the next three runs across, as BU captured the 9-8 edge with a five-spot in the fifth.

The flurry continued with another five runs for Biola in the sixth inning. The run of 16 runs through four innings was capped off with a walkoff base hit from Ruiz. The BU third baseman logged a single that helped the 18th run across in the seventh inning, giving BU a ten run lead and the win.

Tommy Kendlinger put together a great day at the plate, going 2-4 with four RBI and a walk.

Adiel Torres kept up his hitting ways, reaching game number 21 for his incredible hitting streak.

The pitcher on record in the fifth was Josh Eigenbrodt, who nabbed his first win of 2025. Blake Wentz closed out the game on the mound, tallying two scoreless frames with two strikeouts for a stout outing.

Game two of Friday's doubleheader is set to start just after 3:00 pm at Eagles Diamond.
