Can’t Come Back This Time

The tying run came to the dish in the ninth but BU fell to the visiting Vanguard Lions.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles have made a habit of pulling off big comeback wins but the squad came up short in game one on Saturday. Biola (15-15, 12-11 PacWest) threatened to erase a seven-run deficit against Vanguard (19-14, 15-12) but could not overcome in a 8-4 loss.

Good contact in the first inning seemed to spell strong offense for Biola. A walk followed by back-to-back hits opened the scoring and Biola led early, 1-0, off an RBI single from Luke Caruso.

Andrew Zittel started on the bump for BU and drew big whiffs from the Lion bats. Through two frames, Zittel boasted five strikeouts and held VU scoreless.

A home run for the Lions in the third disrupted the flow and knotted the game at one but the lefty for the Eagles maintained his poise and tossed a three-up, three-down fourth.

Vanguard took control in the fifth, leaving the park for a second time for a 3-1 advantage. Two innings later, the Lions made another leap with five runs in the seventh for an 8-1 lead.

Home runs inched Biola back within range. Isaiah Leon hit a moon shot in the seventh to add one run for BU in the bottom of the seventh. In the eighth, Jonny Tewinkle and Sam Lisiak went back-to-back with homers to left field, bringing Biola within four at 8-4.

Aidan Cube posted a pair of scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth and the Eagles still sat behind Vanguard by four runs.

The last chance at the plate came with excitement for the Eagles. Two walks and a single loaded the bases and brought the potential game-tying run to the plate with one out. A new pitcher for Vanguard entered and ended things, as two strikeouts ousted Biola's opportunity.

The top of the lineup for Biola kept up its hot hitting with the first five batters all logging at least one hit. Impressive hitting streaks were added onto with Noah Ruiz and James Whitman reaching 12 games and Isaiah Leon and Adiel Torres reaching 11 games in a row with a base hit.

Game two between the Eagles and Lions is set to start at 3:30 pm in La Mirada.
