Magallan Goes the Distance

Gabe Magallan notched the complete game, as Biola pulled off the 6-2 win for a Friday sweep of Vanguard.

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Friday belonged to the Eagles, who completed the doubleheader sweep on the road against Vanguard (18-14, 14-12 PacWest). Biola (15-14, 12-10 PacWest) relied on the arm of Gabe Magallan, who logged the complete game win in the seven-inning 6-2 victory.

Magallan (4-1) battled through runners on base in six of seven innings to only give up two runs on Friday afternoon. Through his seven frames on the mound, Magallan tallied three strikeouts, while allowing just six hits and three walks.

Vanguard strung together two hits against Magallan in the second frame to put across one run for a small lead.

A five-spot in the fifth inning made the difference for the Biola bats. Walks kicked off the rally, as back-to-back walks put the offense in motion. Noah Ruiz delivered first, taking a full count pitch down the left field line for a two-RBI double. The big hit gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead but the team was not done.

Isaiah Leon drew another walk after Ruiz was picked off on second base. With two outs, Adiel Torres stayed hot at the plate, crushing a home run to double the team's run total. Four pitches later, James Whitman homered, as the Eagles went back-to-back leaving the park. Suddenly, Biola found itself leading, 5-1.

The Lions threatened in the bottom of the fifth but Magallan kept the host squad from striking back. A leadoff single went nowhere with a nice double play from Nick Madole. Then three walks loaded the bases with two outs but a groundout from Vanguard's Madole to Biola's Madole ended the inning with no damage done.

A solo shot brought another run for Vanguard in the sixth but Magallan held on for the 6-2 victory. It was his first career complete game in his ninth start at Biola.

Torres and Leon picked up hits on Friday, as each extended their hitting streak to 10 games.

The Eagles will look to stay on track on Saturday, hosting Vanguard for another 12:00 pm doubleheader at Eagles Diamond.
