Cougars Come To Play On Saturday

Two home runs power an APU upset in game one at Biola on Saturday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Two home runs off APU bats spoiled the opener for Biola at Freedom Field on Saturday. After dominating Friday night, Biola suffered a setback with a 5-2 loss to the Cougars.

Biola's bats produced seven hits and scored the first and final runs of the ballgame, but those two big flies by APU produced an amount of runs that was too much to come back against vs. the Cougars' no. 1 pitcher, Mia Castillo.

After being held to just four total runs on Friday's doubleheader the APU lineup came ready to play in this one. The Cougars scored twice in the fourth to steal back the lead, and then added three more insurance runs over the final two innings to put this one in the bag.

The big shots were a solo home run by Julia Doan in the sixth and then a 2-rbi big fly from the Cougars' stud DP Caitlin Decanio in the seventh.

A Kendall Nakano single brought Jackie ibarra around to score in the Eagles' part of the seventh to begin to close the gap. However, a three-run margin was all the BU team could get as Castillo was brilliant at inducing ground outs all day long.

Biola stranded eight runners on base in this one, including runners on second and third in the fifth.

The Eagles have guaranteed at minimum a split in this series, but the team will look to win it outright with a game two victory on Saturday.

That game will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Freedom Field.
