Keeping it Close in Conference

Biola won another nail-biter, taking a game against Fresno Pacific on the road.

FRESNO, Calif. --- One goal separated Biola and Fresno Pacific in a fantastic bout on Friday afternoon. The two teams were evenly matched but the Eagles pulled ahead late and came up clutch for a 12-11 WWPA victory.

Biola has found a niche winning close games. The team's last three wins have all come by a margin of less than three, including back-to-back narrow conference victories.

In the 32 minute contest on Friday, the two teams tied eight times on the scoreboard.

The biggest lead of the game went to the Sunbirds at just three near the end of the second quarter.

Biola battled back with a four goal rally to take the lead in the second half. The run was led by Gwendolyn Pidd, scoring three-unanswered goals in the third period for an 8-7 Biola lead.

At the top of the fourth quarter, Mia Mulhall dented the twine and put the Eagles up, 11-9.

The Sunbirds were not done yet, scoring on the next possession and tying the game two minutes later.

Ava LoBue denied any thoughts of overtime and delivered with a go-ahead goal right after FPU tied the game. Lizzy Birch lended a helping hand on the score, as the Eagles took control at 12-11.

The Biola defense came to play in the final minutes, keeping the Sunbirds off the scoreboard to secure the win. Two power plays for Fresno Pacific was not enough, as BU held off the host squad.

LoBue was a force on Friday, logging three points with two goals and an assist, while also adding three sprint wins. Alyah Ibarra also nabbed three points with two goals and an assist.

Pidd was the big scorer in the win. The freshman tallied a team-best four goals to go along with an assist for five points. She made an impact defensively as well with three steals to her name.

The Eagles will stay in central California for another game on Saturday, facing UC Merced at 1:00 pm.
