Cornerstone Cup Classic

Nothing could have prepared you for the excitement of game one between Biola and Azusa Pacific, as the Eagles claimed the thriller at home.

LA MIRADA --- Big swings on the field and on the scoreboard made for a chaotic Cornerstone Cup matchup between Biola and Azusa Pacific. Friday's doubleheader kicked off with a game one doozy but it was the Eagles to storm back from a seven-run deficit, stealing a 16-15 victory at home.

Offense was the name of the game with 31 combined runs in the nine-inning contest. The two teams also tallied a total of 15 extra-base hits and six home runs.

The two heavyweights traded blows throughout the contest with six lead changes and ties on the scoreboard by the top of the seventh inning.

The Cougars pulled ahead with a string of big innings on offense. The visitors notched at least three runs in three-straight frames, tacking on 11 runs between the sixth and eighth innings.

Biola faced a sizable 15-8 deficit, as the game turned to the bottom of the eighth but the bats got going. Noah Ruiz sparked the rally with a single and Isaiah Leon followed with a double.

A walk loaded the bases and James Whitman stepped in with nothing to lose. The first baseman pulled one to deep left field and offered a grand slam for a huge boost to the Biola cause. The four-run swing jolted the Eagles to back within three with just one out on the board.

The momentum stayed with the Eagles, as the next two batters reached base via a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Jonny Tewinkle logged an RBI single next and BU was quickly within two runs. Another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, and the Eagles had the go-ahead run at first base with two outs.

Ruiz battled to a full count with the game on the line. A line drive from Ruiz fell in front of a diving APU center fielder and went to the fence for a three RBI triple. The three-base knock put the Eagles ahead, 16-15.

A daunting three outs stood between Biola and a victory, as the team held a one run lead in the top of the ninth. Jack O'Brasky nabbed the first out, before Kyle Osterhage took over with a runner on first. The runner moved to third following a wild pitch and a groundout, putting the tying run 90 feet away for APU.

Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and the Cougars were threatening with two outs on the board. Osterhage got himself a ground ball to third base and Ruiz made the game-ending play in the field, as Biola pulled off the improbable win.

O'Brasky grabbed the win on the mound with two scoreless outs and Osterhage scored the save with two scoreless outs, as well.

The Biola bats posted 16 hits in 38 at bats to bat .421 in the game. Five Eagles landed multiple hits, including three from Ruiz and Leon. Every batter in the starting lineup scored on the way to the win with help from the lead RBI hitters in Ruiz at five, Leon at four and Whitman at four.
