Keeping It Going

The win streak continued for Biola baseball behind go-ahead hits in the last inning of both games.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- The momentum from a series win last week carried over on the flight to Hawaii. The Biola baseball team (9-8, 6-4 PacWest) played it close but snuck away with a Saturday sweep against Hawaii Pacific (5-9, 3-7 PacWest).

GAME ONE
Nothing came easy for the Eagles in a roller coaster win in game one. A back and forth game went to extras and it was Biola to pull off the victory with the help of a Luke Caruso game-winning hit.

The Sharks struck first with three runs through the first two frames, while the Eagles were held off the scoreboard until the fourth.

Once Biola found some momentum, the team hit hard. Four runs came across for BU in the fourth with four hits and a walk. Isaiah Leon offered the big hit, knocking a double to center field for two RBI.

The fourth inning was only the start as the BU squad continued to add to its run total. From the fourth through the sixth, the Eagles tacked on 11 runs to burst ahead. Nicholas Whippo added three runs in the fifth with a swing of the bat for a two-out home run.

An 11-4 Biola lead seemed safe but the Sharks chipped away. The host squad corralled five runs between the sixth and seventh frames to pull within two with two innings to go.

In the bottom of the ninth, Hawaii Pacific found the rally to extend the game. Two more runs knotted the game at 11 and the game was headed for the 10th.

Caruso offered the magic to put Biola ahead, lacing a single to score Tommy Kendlinger from second base. The team put more runners in scoring position but the 12-11 lead would need to be enough heading to the bottom of the 10th.

Kyle Osterhage did not waste much time, securing the win on the mound. The BU reliever forced a flyout to start the inning, before giving up a walk. A pinch hitter ended the game, as Osterhage got himself a double play ball.

Noah Ruiz joined Whippo with a home run on Saturday. The Biola team recorded six extra-base hits, including a pair of doubles from James Whitman. Whitman logged four hits in the game, going 4-6 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored.

Caruso also went 4-6, grabbing four singles and a run batted in. Adiel Torres also stayed hot at the plate with a trio of hits for BU.

GAME TWO
The second game of the day looked familiar as Hawaii Pacific moved in front with runs in the opening innings. Walks and free bases hurt the Eagles, as the Sharks scored two runs on one hit.

Once again, mirroring game one, the Biola bats found success in inning number four. Jonny Tewinkle emptied the bases with a triple, scoring three Eagles to give his team the lead. Nick Madole brought home Tewinkle, adding a double in the next at bat for four runs in the fourth.

Biola kept it going in the fifth, battling with two outs. A double from Isaiah Leon gave BU a 5-2 edge, scoring James Whitman.

Free bases continued to plague the Eagles, as HPU bounced back. The Sharks brought in three runs on just one hit and tied the game with two innings to go.

An empty sixth inning led to a decisive final frame. The Eagles left no doubt with a huge at bat in the seventh, including a pair of home runs. Six runs boosted Biola to a big lead with three outs to go.

Nathan Hernandez delivered those final outs for Biola. The Oxnard College transfer recorded the last six outs of the game between the sixth and seventh innings, collecting his first win at Biola.

Sam Lisiak blasted the go-ahead homer in the seventh inning. The senior stepped in as a pinch hitter and did not disappoint with his third homer of the year. Adiel Torres also picked up his third home run, scoring a three-run shot later in the seventh.

The Eagles will be back in action at Hawaii Pacific on Monday, beginning a doubleheader at 5:00 pm PT.
