Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Eagles Take The Tank

Biola digs deep in the fourth quarter to pick up a 13-11 conference win at The Otter Tank.

MARINA, Calif. — Biola Women's Water Polo opened up Western Water Polo Association play on Saturday with a gutsy road win over the CSU Monterey Bay Otters. Biola conquered the Otter Tank courtesy of a dig-deep fourth quarter to win the match 13-11.

The match was too close to call throughout as Biola led by one through eight minutes and then the two teams were tied at halfrime and coming out of the third.

Senior goalkeeper Chloe McKay told her team as they swam out for the fourth period that the goal was to not let CSUMB score even one more. Sure enough, courtesy some great 6-on-5 defense and some perimeter takeaways Biola did hold the Otters scoreless and used late tallies from Gwen Pidd and Alyah Ibarra to snag the victory.

It took some time for Biola to get in its rhythm on the offensive end, but a focus on creating motion and havoc lifted the team above during that decisive fourth period. The Eagles executed their passes and took high-percentage shots, which was not always the result of their offensive possessions in periods two and three.

Biola overcame being called for 13 exclusions throughout the contest. Despite being down a player, the team showed grit on defense in the man-down scenarios. They allowed only three successful power plays to the home school.

The Eagles were active on defense throughout, collecting 15 steals on the day. They were led by four from Ava LoBue and McKay added three more in a stellar 16 minutes between the pipes in the second half. McKay also had five blocks in helping BU out-score the Otters 4-2 in the second half.

Fourth-year Eagles paced the offensive contributions as Ava LoBue and Veralue Naranjo each had three goals a piece. Those two and Myah Ibarra all had two assists, making for fantastic 5-point games for the seniors.

The win brings Biola to 4-13 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Biola won its third straight game, this time executing well under acting head coach Elyssa Hawkins.

Up next for the team is an exciting opportunity for a non-conference night game at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center. They host Marist at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.
