Eagles Battle in San Marcos

The opening day of the Fujikura Invitational had the Eagles in seventh place.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Biola hit the course on Monday morning, kicking off the Fujikura Invitational with back-to-back rounds. A team score of +39 placed the BU squad in seventh place amongst a field of 14 teams.


Claire Shubin was cooking in the first round on Monday, crushing the course at the Shadowridge Country Club. She landed more birdies than bogeys with four holes under-par, two on the front nine and two on the back for a score of 71 (-1). Shubin ended round one in a tie for third, before ending the day in a tie for 14th place. She turned in 10 pars in round two and finished with a score of 80 (+8).

Karis Haltom was the next best finisher for Biola, notching a score of +10 with rounds of 76 and 78. The sophomore went for eight pars on the front nine of round one and added a birdie on the back nine. In her second time through the course, she got the better of holes three and five, adding two more birdies to her day. On the individual leaderboard through two rounds, Haltom ranked tied for 24th.

The remaining three Eagles matched each other on the scoreboard with a +14 mark through two rounds on Monday. Melanie Reyes, Theresa Shaw, and Rachel Shaw all recorded 158 strokes to tie for 38th place.

Reyes tallied rounds of 80 and 76, while collecting 21 pars. She ended her first round on a high note, logging back-to-back birdies on the last two holes of the round. Reyes also got her revenge on hole number two, double bogeying it in round one, before birding the hole on the second attempt later in the day.

Theresa Shaw battled back after a tough first round to absolutely deliver in round two. She buried three birdies in a four-hole span, while completing the round with a 74 on her scorecard. 19 pars and three birdies highlighted her day with rounds of 84 and 74.

Rachel Shaw excelled on par 5s, on her way to scores of 79 in both rounds. The senior was second-best in the tournament on par 5s, going two-under on the long distance holes. Shaw collected three birdies on the day, along with 21 pars.

Hailey Hays competed as an individual on Monday, landing in a tie for 46th with marks of 82 and 78.

The Eagles will be back on the course for the third and final round of the Fujikura Invitational at 8:30 am on Tuesday.
