Reyes Sets Tone for BU in Round 1

The Biola women’s golf team finished a fun day at the Corica Park Golf Course.

ALAMEDA, Calif.---The Biola women's golf team finished a fun day at the Corica Park Golf Course.

The Eagles traveled to two teams, Team A and Team B. Team A consisted of Melanie Reyes, Claire Shubin, Rachel Shaw, Theresa Shaw and Abigale Morris. Team B included Karis Haltom, Hailey Hays, Laura Ortiz, Sofia Ingle and Emily Cons.

"This is a talented team that is playing with a lot of heart this Spring," shared head coach Jane Carr. "I am proud of them for staying steady out there and fighting for each other. It is great to have two teams in the field and seeing them both cheer each other on."

Team A finished the first round of the two-round invitational tied for first with hosts Cal State East Bay. The Eagles' A Team combined for three-over-par in their first round.

BU, nationally-ranked No. 43 by Clippd, surpassed four other nationally-ranked teams including #9 Cal State San Marcos, #24 Simon Fraser, #32 Cal State LA and #41 Colorado St-Pueblo. Biola also finished ahead of the five other PacWest Conference teams in attendance, Jessup, Hawaii Pacific, ART U, Dominican, and Point Loma. The Eagles' B Team finished 12th of the 19 teams and ahead of Dominican and Point Loma.

Everyone in the A Team scored under 80. Reyes was on fire, scoring a personal best round of three-under-par 69 which placed her third on the leaderboard. Reyes led the field in Par 4 scoring, where she averaged -2. She also led her team with five birdies.

"Melanie was certainly fun to watch today," stated Carr. "She has grown so much as a person and a player the last four years at Biola. Mel is one of the most talented ball strikers. I've always said that if she gets in a groove she will find a lot of birdies."

Shubin also placed in the top 10 in the first round. The Graduate Student finished seventh with a score of par. Behind Shubin was Rachel Shaw (+3), Theresa Shaw (+3) and Morris (+4).

Biola's B Team was paced by Haltom who tied for 22nd on the leaderboard with a scorecard of +3. Haltom was followed by Hays (+5), Ortiz (+8), Ingle (+12) and Cons (+15).

Rachel Shaw, Haltom and Shubin recorded three birdies in their first rounds. Theresa Shaw, Hays, Ortiz and Cons had two birdies and Ingle earned one. 

BU's second round starts tomorrow Tuesday, February 25 at 7:30 a.m.
