Always Getting Better

Biola women’s water polo continued its preseason fight against RV Pomona Pitzer on Sunday.

NEWPORT  BEACH, Calif. --- The final stage of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational saw the lone two non-NCAA DI teams battle it out at Corona Del Mar High School. The Sunday morning matchup favored RV Pomona Pitzer (3-5) in a 14-8 final score over Biola (1-10).

Sunday's contest was the fourth game in three days for Biola at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The 15th-place game between Biola and Pomona Pitzer rounded out the invite for both teams.

Destiny Moreno got things going for the Eagles in the first quarter, posting a pair of scores. The goals gave Biola 2-1 edge but the two teams ended the first stanza knotted at three with Veralie Naranjo netting the other goal for the Eagles.

The offense slowed in quarter two as the Sagehens moved ahead. Pomona Pitzer tacked on two tallies, while BU added none for a 5-3 halftime deficit.

The two teams traded scores to start the third. Christina Cervantes cashed in on the first with a power play thanks to an assist from Myah Ibarra. Naranjo came up with the next two, grabbing a power play and even strength goals to put Biola within one at 7-6.

The final two goals of the third went the way of Pomona Pitzer putting Biola down by three with eight minutes to go.

Naranjo kept firing and brought the Eagles back within two with the first goal of the final period. The Sagehens responded and sealed the win with three-straight goals in a two minute stretch.

Naranjo maintained her incredible pace on offense, logging her third-straight five goal game. Her ferocious attack has her sitting just outside of the top-10 in the nation for goals per game at 2.9.

The Biola offense did well to draw 15 Pomona Pitzer exclusions and went on to score six goals off those extra man opportunities.

Ava LoBue was a key distributor in the offense with three helpers on Sunday.

Biola will now look ahead to the Claremont Convergence set to begin on Friday against Michigan at 12:45 pm.
