Taking One for the Team, Biola Wins Both

A walkoff hit by pitch ended a roller coaster game one and the Eagles pushed forward for a Saturday sweep over Jessup.

GAME ONE

LA MIRADA --- Game three of the series and game one of the day between Biola and Jessup was a doozy. The two teams combined for 25 runs and 24 hits and were separated by just one run on the scoreboard. The one run difference came in the bottom of the ninth, as Luke Caruso walked it off for Biola with a hit-by-pitch.

Biola (6-8, 3-4 PacWest) picked up its sixth win of the season in dramatic fashion, taking down Jessup (8-2, 5-2 PacWest), 13-12, in the front end of the Saturday doubleheader.

In a game of big swings on the scoreboard, it was Jessup to make the first major move with five runs in the top of the second. Three homers pushed the visitors ahead, erasing a 1-0 first inning lead for BU.

Freshman Nicholas Whippo responded with a two-run shot. Cutting into the deficit, the catcher launched a home run in a second-straight game.

Entering the bottom of the sixth, Jessup still maintained a slight lead at 7-5 but the Eagles came up big. After posting 13 runs in the sixth inning the day before, Biola added six in the six spot on Saturday. Noah Ruiz and Adiel Torres laced RBI doubles to bring in runners and the Biola squad found themselves up by four.

The BU offense pushed its lead to 12-7 in the seventh, however the roller coaster had not come to a stop.

The Warriors started a rally in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs. The next pitch left the park and suddenly the visitors were back within one run. Another two out rally for Jessup knotted the game at 12, as the Warriors survived with an RBI single in the ninth.

With the game on the line, the Biola offense found a way. The Eagles loaded the bases quickly in the bottom of the ninth without even taking the bat off their shoulder. A hit by pitch and back-to-back intentional walks made it so a hit by pitch for Luke Caruso ended the game with a 13-12 victory for Biola.

Four Eagles grabbed multiple hits in the contest, including Ruiz with three hits and four RBI.

Jack O'Brasky and Nick Brown offered good relief innings on the mound, combining for 4.1 innings pitched with two total runs allowed. Dylan Alanis picked up the win, tossing the final four outs.

GAME TWO

The BU offense kept the momentum and sealed another victory in the back half of Saturday's doubleheader. A 7-3 victory for Biola (7-8, 4-4 PacWest) over the Warriors (8-3, 5-3 PacWest) sealed a series win in the two team's first series as PacWest opponents.

Once again, the Biola lineup did not take long to strike, impacting the scoreboard in their first time at the plate. Noah Ruiz and Tommy Kendlinger reached base with the first two at bats but it was Adiel Torres with two outs coming up with the clutch hit to score both his teammates in the first.

The scoring continued in the third frame, as the Eagles loaded the bases behind back-to-back hit-by-pitches, followed by a bunt single by Isaiah Leon. BU catcher Josh McAninch offered an RBI knock with a hard hit ball through the left side of the infield. Cole Thomson brought home two more in the next at bat, doubling to right field.

Biola offered four runs in the third to boast a 6-0 advantage.

The visitors rallied for three in the fourth inning but BU kept them at bay for the 7-3 final score.

Gabe Magallan drew the start and notched the win with four innings on the mound. He grabbed three strikeouts and gave up just one walk.

It was a team effort in relief, as Kyle Osterhage, Ty Cowley, and Caleb Bennett each logged three outs and two strikeouts apiece without allowing a run.

Torres continued his hot start to 2025, going 2-2 at the plate in game two with three RBI and one run scored. The sophomore has already landed seven hits in 12 at bats with three-straight multi-hit games this year.

The Eagles will head to Hawaii for their next series, taking on Hawaii Pacific next Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 pm PT.
