Eagles Drop Series Opener To Jessup

The Biola baseball team sparked a late ninth inning rally, but it wasn’t enough to come out on top in the first PacWest matchup between BU and Jessup.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola Eagles (4-8, 1-4 PacWest) and Jessup Warriors (8-0, 5-0 PacWest) met at Eagles Diamond for their first PacWest match up on Friday morning. BU dropped the first of four by a score of 8-6. The Eagles were slow to start, but eventually put up a few runs to keep their name in the game before a late last chance rally.

A home run and two Biola errors led to the Warriors early 4-0 lead. Jessup led after two innings and held the Eagles scoreless until the third.

Noah Ruiz rounded the bases after launching the ball over the left field fence to get the Eagles on the board in the bottom of the third inning.

In the fifth inning, a pair of base hits and a walk scored two more runs for the Warriors extending their lead to 6-1. Isaiah Leon answered back in the bottom of the inning with a double, driving in James Whitman to cut the deficit to 6-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Luke Caruso sparked a two-out rally, which eventually brought in two runs. Caruso's single was followed by a Whitman double, then Josh McAninch hit an RBI single, chopping down Jessup's lead to 6-4.

Jessup tallied a run in both the seventh and eighth inning while keeping BU scoreless, but Biola's offense woke up in the bottom of the ninth inning.

McAninch was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the ninth inning. Isaiah Leon walked and Ruiz singled to load the bases. Tommy Kendlinger hit a bouncer to left field which drove in two late runs for the Eagles. BU was unable to bring in more runs, resulting in an 8-6 loss for Biola.

Ruiz went 3-for-4 in game one and recorded his third home run of the season. Whitman was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Kendlinger recorded the big two-RBI single in the ninth inning.

Drew Zittle got the start and gave up two earned runs, struck out two and walked three in his two innings on the mound. The Warriors got the best of relief pitcher, Blake Wentz, after his two clean innings when they scored two runs on two hits in the fifth. Aidan Cube and Nathan Hernandez issued a scoreless combined three innings. John Iancono also saw time on the mound in Friday's first game.

The Eagles are back on the field at 2 p.m. against the Warriors for game two of a four game series.
