Biola Bats Explode

Biola recorded 25 runs, matching a program record for runs in a game, in a big 25-4 win against Jessup.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola Eagles (5-8, 2-4 PacWest) issued the Jessup Warriors (8-1, 5-1 PacWest) their first loss of the season in a big 25-4 win for the Eagles. Biola recorded 25 runs on 19 hits and zero errors in the second match up of the day between the Warriors and Eagles. In just seven innings, Biola's 25 runs matched a program record and was just the fifth time ever scoring as many runs.

Late in the second inning, Biola made their way onto the board first. With two outs, Nicholas Whippo was hit by a pitch followed by a single from Isaiah Leon. Nick Madole and Noah Ruiz then logged back-to-back base hits, driving in Whippo, Leon and Madole to take a 3-0 lead at the end of the second.

The Warriors picked up an unearned run off of a passed ball in the third inning, putting Jessup on the board.

In the bottom half of the third, Biola's offense got to work, scoring eight runs on five hits and logging three RBI doubles in the inning.

The third frame scoring began with a single and sacrifice bunt which drove in two Eagles to extend their lead to 5-1. Madole then walked to load the bases. Tommy Kendlinger logged the first RBI double of the inning, driving in two. With runners on second and third, Ty Cowley hit a bases-clearing double, scoring another pair of Eagles. Whitman kept the streak going, with another double, clearing the bases, and extending Biola's lead to 11-1.

By way of a double steal, Jessup added another run to their name in the fourth inning.

At the top of the fourth inning, Coach Jesse Rodgers made a defensive change, replacing Noah Ruiz with Adiel Torres who did not disappoint. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Torres swung at the first pitch he saw and launched it over the left field fence adding one to the Eagles lead.

A double and a wild pitch tallied on two for the Warriors, but Biola still had a strong 12-4 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Eagles' offense exploded as they sent three over the fence and drove in 13 runs on 8 hits.

Cole Wentz and Whippo launched a pair of back-to-back no-doubters to kick off the Eagles' spark.  Biola loaded the bases for Kendlinger who singled, bringing in a run and keeping the bases loaded. Jonny Tewinkle walked with nowhere to go, racking on another. Whitman and Wentz were both hit by pitches, still with nowhere to go, sprinkling on two more easy runs for the Eagles. In Whippo's second plate appearance of the inning, he singled to center field, giving the Eagles a solid 20-4 lead. Madole recorded his second base-hit of the day, driving in another pair. Torres then came to the plate and hit his second home run of the day, this time driving in three runs to cap off Biola's 13 run inning.

Chris McClean pitched a scoreless seventh inning, keeping the Warriors at four and sealing the big win for Biola.

Luke Ballantyne picked up his second win of the season in his outing on Friday afternoon. The starter allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out four in his four innings on the mound.

Torres went 2-for-3 on the day with four RBIs and added to his impressive start to his collegiate career. On Friday, he recorded his first two collegiate home runs which also went down as two of his first three hits of his career.

Kendlinger and Whitman each went 3-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and two runs scored. Whippo was also 3-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored.

Biola and Jessup are back at Eagles Diamond tomorrow, February 22 at 11 am and 2 pm for the final two games of the series.
