Dive Shines on Day Two

Biola swim and dive continued its quest at the PCSC Championships with Thursday action at the ELAC Swim Stadium.

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. --- Events 11-22 highlighted day two at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships in Monterey Park, California. The Eagles racked up points on the diving boards with four podium finishes, adding to three top-three placements in the swimming portion on Thursday.


Through 22 events, the BU men held third place amongst a field of nine teams with 271 points. The Biola women's squad ended the day in fifth place at 181 points.

The big splash came in the early afternoon, as the BU divers made their leaps into the pool. Lorelai Carney and Abby DePina went one-two in the 3M dive to dominate for BU. The duo were the only two to surpass 400 points, as Carney took first at 418.60 and DePina took second place at 405.70. Lauren Smith rounded out the women's divers, taking fifth place on the 3M board.

Another event crown was earned by Biola on the men's 1M board. Sebastian Burgos led the field for the top spot with a score of 334.35. A spring addition to the team, John Grasso, was not far behind, taking third place at 263.90.

The scoring continued in the pool with the 200 free and 400 medley relays. Nathan Griffin, Jacob Haaksma, Andrew Hanson, and Koen Vos joined forces in the 400 medley relay to nab second place at 3:21.47. The BU women's top squad collected a time of 3:50.73 for fourth place in the same event. In the 200 free relay, the women grabbed sixth place and the men finished in fifth.

The first individual race of the night showcased an Eagle in the top three, as Allison Yancey found a spot on the podium. She raced to third place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.90. Morgan Kampfer also made the top finals heat for the 100 fly, landing in eighth place. On the men's side, Nathan Griffin scored in the 100 fly, touching at 49.79 for sixth place.

Another bronze medal reached Biola by way of Samuel Slezak. The junior added his second podium finish of the championships with a third place showing in the 200 free. He finished with a time of 1:38.85 and was joined by two other Eagles in the top eight. Vos and Alejandro Marchesini went sixth and seventh in the same event, landing within a second of each other at 1:40.18 and 1:40.56, respectively. For the BU women, Kimmy Gordon scored in the 200 free, taking 15th place for 12 points.

In the 400 individual medley, three Eagles posted top-14 placements. Colette Friedley grabbed seventh place at 4:34.84, before Malia Ciolli and Lydia Hawthorne placed 13th and 14th for BU.

The PCSC Championships will continue on Friday with prelim swims opening the day at 9:30 am to be followed by diving at 1:00 pm and swim finals at 5:00 pm.
